Simon Smith had just finished paying in a wage cheque at his bank when he was hit by the No. 17 bus in Reading at around 9am on Wednesday.

CCTV footage of the incident, which has since gone viral, showed Simon hitting his head on the windscreen before being thrown 45ft across the pavement.



But instead of waiting for help, Simon, a HGV driver, picked himself up and walked into the Purple Turtle pub, where he used to work.

He has since spoken out, telling The Sun that despite everyone thinking he’d gone for a pint, he was actually looking for a place of refuge.

Simon said: ‘I heard some banging behind me and I was hit from behind. I didn’t tense because I didn’t know it was coming.



‘After it, I just wanted to get somewhere safe. It’s quite funny everybody think I have gone for a pint. I was actually looking for a place of refuge when I went into the doorway of the pub.’



He added that police and paramedics didn’t believe that he’d been hit by the bus, insisting instead that it must have been debris.

It was only until they saw the CCTV at the pub that they came back and allegedly said: ‘I’m really sorry you were right’.

Simon added that he feels ‘very lucky’ to be alive and is glad that his wife and five-year-old daughter were not with him at the time.

The incident happened around 9am on Saturday morning

Fortunately, he managed to escape with just a few cuts and bruises following the shocking collision.

Daniel Fraifeld, 50, who co-owns the Purple Turtle bar, said: ‘I think he [Simon] pretty much got up, brushed himself down and then an ambulance came and took him to be checked.

‘He got looked over and didn’t have any lasting injuries – but he’s covered in scrapes and bruises. He then got released from the hospital and I think he just went for a pint to relax.’
