Wolves 0-1 Liverpool: Late Origi winner catapults Reds above Chelsea by sundaysamuel381(m) : 8:05 am On Dec 05, 2021

Divock Origi hit a stoppage-time winner to send Liverpool above Chelsea in the Premier League table as the Reds overcame Wolves 1-0 at Molineux.

A dramatic breakthrough arrived in the fourth added minute when Mohamed Salah raced down the right and pulled the ball back for Origi, who controlled, turned and fired past Jose Sa to decide a game that looked certain to finish goalless.

The Reds, who had scored at least twice in each of their last 18 games, dominated possession and had two particularly presentable chances, but they were mainly handled well by a strong Wolves defence until the late drama.

A determined home side grew into the game, and threatened on occasion, with Adama Traore particularly troubling the Liverpool midfield and backline with his power and pace, but ultimately it was not enough to avoid defeat.

After a quiet start, the game came to life around the half-hour mark as Trent Alexander-Arnold and former Wolves man Diogo Jota missed opportunities from crosses, but it was Salah who came closest to breaking the deadlock in the first half.
The Egyptian was about to tap in an Andy Robertson ball across the box when Romain Saiss somehow nicked the ball away from the Premier League's top scorer at the last moment.

The visitors continued to probe for an opener in the second half and could not believe they were not ahead on the hour. Jota seized on a mistake between Jose Sa and Saiss but inexplicably smashed the ball straight at Conor Coady on the goal-line.

After trying to blow the Wolves' door down, the winner finally arrived when Salah squared for Belgian substitute Origi, who made no mistake to send his team top of the table for at least a few hours.

What does it mean? Reds starting to look like title winners

After West Ham's win against Chelsea earlier in the day, Liverpool were desperate to do their job and get three points to take them above the Blues.

For most of the afternoon it looked like, for the second time in the last few weeks, the Reds were going to be unable to capitalise on a Chelsea slip-up, having lost to West Ham on the same weekend that Thomas Tuchel's men drew at home to Burnley.

They finally got the win at Molineux with a last-gasp goal, very much akin to the late winners they managed when they lifted the league title two seasons ago.

Origi presents the late, late show, again

There are few players more enigmatic than Origi. A man who arguably deserves a statue more than a starting place at Anfield after famous late goals in a Champions League final and a Merseyside derby in recent years.

It had been a while since the Belgian scored the sort of late goal for which he had become renowned, but he was in the right place at the right time with ice in his veins to score his first Premier League goal since the final day of the 2019-20 season.

Unlucky Wolves lack bite

This outcome felt harsh on Bruno Lage's side, having defended so well for almost the entire 95 minutes. Before today they had the joint-third best defence in the league this season, level with Liverpool on 12 conceded, and it was evident why as they limited their free-scoring visitors mostly to a few half-chances before they were finally beaten.

Wolves are struggling to even look like scoring at the other end, though, having only three shots here with one on target, following up a 0-0 at home to Burnley in midweek, and only Norwich City (8) have scored fewer than their 12 league goals this campaign.

Key Opta facts

- Origi's decisive strike was Liverpool’s 39th winning goal scored in 90+ minutes in the Premier League, at least 13 more than other side.
- Liverpool have scored in each of their last 25 Premier League games, since a 1-0 loss against Fulham in March.
- Liverpool have kept more clean sheets than any other Premier League side this season (9).
- Wolves had three shots in this game, their fewest in a Premier League match since March 2019 (two, against Chelsea).
- Origi's goal was his 10th as a substitute in the Premier League for Liverpool – no player has netted more from the bench for the club in the competition.
- Salah has either scored or assisted a goal in each of his last 13 appearances in the Premier League. The Egyptian tops the charts for both goals (13) and assists (9) in the competition so far this term.

What’s next?

Wolves will be away to champions Manchester City in the Premier League next Saturday, while Liverpool travel to San Siro to face Milan in their final Champions League group game on Tuesday.

Borussia Dortmund 2-3 Bayern Munich: Lewandowski compounds Hummels nightmare in by sundaysamuel381(m) : 8:11 am On Dec 05, 2021

Robert Lewandowski scored twice, including a late penalty, as Bayern Munich edged title rivals Borussia Dortmund 3-2 in Saturday's thrilling Klassiker to go four points clear at the Bundesliga summit.

Lewandowski lost out to Lionel Messi for the Ballon d'Or this week, but he continued to let his football do the talking, taking his goals tally against his former club to 26 – more than he has managed against any other team.

Both sides created at will in a gripping first half, but Dortmund – who led through Julian Brandt in the fifth minute – paid the price for costly mistakes as Lewandowski and Kingsley Coman ensured Bayern were 2-1 up at half-time.

A sumptuous Erling Haaland strike got Dortmund back on level terms, but after somehow not winning a penalty of their own, they conceded one themselves and Lewandowski converted to seal the win, setting a Bundesliga away goals record in the process.

A purposeful Dortmund start brought an early opener as Brandt – later withdrawn due to a nasty head injury – collected Jude Bellingham's lofted pass and finished emphatically having evaded Alphonso Davies.

But Bayern quickly hit back, Lewandowski clinically finding the bottom-right corner with his record-equalling 117th Bundesliga away goal after Thomas Muller charged down Mats Hummels' clearance attempt.

Several chances were wasted at either end thereafter, but Bayern managed to take a lead into the break.

Another botched Dortmund clearance – this time Guerreiro smashing into Hummels' midriff – saw the ball fall for Coman and he drilled home.

Dortmund restored parity again just after the interval, Haaland curling a gorgeous effort out of Manuel Neuer's reach and in off the right post.
They should have had the chance to lead a few minutes later but Lucas Hernandez mystifyingly avoided conceding a penalty when appearing to commit a blatant foul on Marco Reus.

Hummels was not so lucky, however, with a VAR check deeming him to have handled at a corner. Lewandowski squeezed his winning kick just inside the post for another away goal, an outright Bundesliga record for the Pole, and a valuable win for Bayern.

What does it mean? Advantage Bayern

The way this season has been shaping up, there is a lot to suggest this could be the closest title race in a while – after all, before this game Bayern had enjoyed their best start after 13 games in six years, while Dortmund were in the midst of their third-best start in the three-points-for-a-win era.

But Bayern certainly have the upper hand now, both in terms of their four-point lead at the top of the table and psychologically.

Dortmund will consider themselves extremely unlucky given the penalty controversies, but they also squandered some big opportunities.

Bellingham brilliant but petulant

There is no doubting Bellingham's quality, and he was excellent here, setting up both of Dortmund's goals as he impressed in a massive game once again. But it was not all great – on more than one occasion he appeared to dive, often appearing more interested in winning a free-kick than keeping the ball in play.

Mad Mats

If there is anyone in the Dortmund dressing room likely to be fuming with their performance, it will be Hummels. You could argue he was unfortunate with the penalty concession given the jostling that was going on (though he did handle the ball…), and there was not much he could do about Guerreiro kicking the ball against him, but he was at fault for the first goal and largely looked shaky, especially in the first half.

What's next?

After midweek Champions League action, Bayern are at home to Mainz on Saturday and Dortmund face Bochum on the road at the same time.

Atletico Madrid 1-2 Real Mallorca: Russo stops Simeone's men reclaiming second by sundaysamuel381(m) : 8:16 am On Dec 05, 2021

Takefusa Kubo struck a stoppage-time winner as Real Mallorca came from behind to stun Atletico Madrid and clinch a 2-1 at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Diego Simeone's side created some decent openings in either half but it was not until Matheus Cunha prodded the ball home in the 68th minute that they finally broke through.

However, Franco Russo rose above substitute Mario Hermoso to head home an equaliser with 10 minutes remaining, setting up a tense finale.

Kubo, a second-half substitute who is on loan from Atleti's rivals Real Madrid, then raced away on the break in the 91st minute and slid a cool finish under Jan Oblak to seal a surprise victory for Mallorca.
Hermoso replaced Stefan Savic due to an apparent hamstring injury in the 11th minute and Atleti were denied an opener shortly after when Angel Correa's volley from six yards was blocked by the chest of Jaume Costa.

Renan Lodi was unable to beat Manolo Reina in a one-on-one situation and Mallorca started to become more adventurous – Lee Kang-in seeing a powerful drive pushed away from the top-right corner by Oblak after the half-hour mark.

The deadlock was finally broken when Cunha scuffed Correa's cross into the air but volleyed it in while prone on the floor, with Russo's header coming after the ball had crossed the line.

However, Russo did end up making a telling impact with his head, steering Lee's free-kick into the bottom-left corner.

Kubo then struck the decisive blow in added time, with Joao Felix blazing a glorious chance to equalise over from inside the six-yard box before the final whistle.

What does it mean? The tables turn

Heading into this round of fixtures, no side had gained more points (10) following goals in the final 15 minutes of LaLiga games this season than Atleti.

The boot was on the other foot on this occasion, as goals from Russo and Kubo meant they surrendered three instead.

With Sevilla and Real Betis having won earlier in the day, Atleti were left fourth in the table and will find themselves 10 points adrift of LaLiga leaders Real Madrid if Carlo Ancelotti's side win at Real Sociedad later on Saturday.

Oblak landmark one to forget

He may have made history with his 244th LaLiga appearance for Atleti being the most made by any goalkeeper for the club, but he will be keen to forget the closing stages after seeing Russo and Kubo get the better of him.

Joao must he feel?

Simeone sent Joao Felix on to enhance his side's chances of sneaking a win, but the Portugal attacker had just 12 touches and only completed five passes in his 30 minutes on the pitch. He also missed a great chance to salvage a point.

What's next?

Atleti will be looking to keep their Champions League campaign alive at Porto on Tuesday, while Mallorca are back in action on Friday at home to Celta Vigo in LaLiga.

Roma 0-3 Inter: Dzeko on target as Mourinho suffers heavy loss to former club by sundaysamuel381(m) : 8:24 am On Dec 05, 2021

Edin Dzeko was on target against his former side as Inter inflicted a 3-0 defeat on Jose Mourinho's Roma in Saturday's one-sided Serie A contest.

Mourinho was facing off against Inter in the league for the first time since guiding the club to a magical treble in 2009-10 – the second of two successful seasons at San Siro – but he suffered a painful reunion at the Stadio Olimpico.

Hakan Calhanoglu opened the scoring directly from a corner and then teed up Dzeko, who spent six seasons with Roma prior to swapping clubs in August, before Denzel Dumfries added a third in the first half.

Inter lost Joaquin Correa to a hamstring injury but eased to victory as they moved to within a point of leaders Milan. Napoli have a chance to return to the summit when they face Atalanta later on Saturday.
Roma have kept the most home clean sheets of any Serie A side in 2021 with 10, including four in their past five games, but they conceded after 15 minutes as Calhanoglu's corner caught Rui Patricio out at his near post.

The champions doubled their lead nine minutes later through Dzeko, who ended a six-game scoring drought in the league by turning home first time after being picked out by Calhanoglu.

Shortly after Dzeko had been denied by a good Patricio save, right wing-back Dumfries converted Alessandro Bastoni's cross with a diving header to put Inter out of sight by the 39-minute mark.

Roma were without a number of key players, including Lorenzo Pellegrini and Tammy Abraham, and that told as they struggled to find a way back into the match in a straightforward victory for Inter.
What does it mean? Misery for Mourinho, Inter march on

This fixture has produced the most goals in Serie A history, with that tally now standing at 514 in total after Inter's rampant first-half display.

Inter stretched their unbeaten run in the league to eight games, winning the last four of those, and are well positioned to defend their Scudetto crown in Simone Inzaghi's first season in charge.

As for Nerazzurri treble-winner Mourinho, this is just a second home defeat in 45 games as a manager in Serie A, with the other coming against Milan at the end of October.

Classy Calhanoglu

Calhanoglu scored one and assisted another of Inter's three goals and has now been directly involved in six goals in his past five league games – as many involvements as his previous 19 matches in the competition.

The opening goal was perhaps a little fortunate, with that strike ensuring Inter have now scored in 18 successive away league games to equal a club record set in 1951.

Patricio's shocker

The Roma keeper will perhaps argue Nicolo Zaniolo or Bryan Cristante should have dealt with Calhanoglu's delivery, but he hardly covered himself in glory with his attempt to get across and keep the ball out.

Mourinho's men crumbled after that early setback, conceding two more goals and registering just one attempt on target in the absence of their two most dangerous attacking players in Pellegrini and Abraham.

Key Opta Facts:

- Roma have lost seven of their first 16 Serie A games for the first time since 2008-09.

- Since 2011-12, Calhanoglu is only the sixth player to find the net directly from a corner in Serie A (after Jose Callejon, Erick Pulgar, Rodrigo de Paul, Papu Gomez and Marco Rigoni).

- Since November, only Mario Pasalic (seven) has been involved in more goals than Hakan Calhanoglu (six) in Serie A.

- With his goal against Roma, Dzeko has scored against 69 different sides. Since his debut in Europe's top five leagues in 2007-08, only Cristiano Ronaldo (75) and Zlatan Ibrahimovic (76) have scored against more teams.

- Dumfries scored his first Serie A goal with his fifth shot on target in the competition. He is the 10th Dutch player to score for Inter in Serie A.

What's next?

Roma conclude their Europa Conference League group campaign with a trip to CSKA Sofia on Thursday, while Inter travel to Real Madrid on Tuesday battling for top spot in Champions League Group D.

Watford 1-3 Manchester City: Silva at the double as champions go top by sundaysamuel381(m) : 8:33 am On Dec 05, 2021

Bernardo Silva scored a stunning goal as Manchester City beat Watford 3-1 at Vicarage Road to go top of the Premier League.

Raheem Sterling headed in an early opener after being found in acres of space in the box with less than four minutes on the clock before Silva fired in a second at the near post to give City a two-goal lead at the break.

The in-form Portugal midfielder then stole the show with a superb strike, cutting onto his left foot from the right and curling sweetly into the top-left corner.

Watford pulled one back through Cucho Hernandez, who steered home the rebound after his initial shot came back off the post, but the champions cruised to a victory that moved them to the summit.
City nearly took the lead when Aymeric Laporte's header from a corner was cleared off the line, but they opened the scoring in the fourth minute, when Phil Foden's cross from the left was nodded in by an unmarked Sterling at the back post.

The visitors continued to carve Watford apart with ease after going in front and Daniel Bachmann was forced to make three saves - one from Sterling, two from Jack Grealish - before the 11-minute mark.

City squandered several more opportunities to extend their advantage, with Grealish particularly wasteful, before Silva lashed home from a tight angle after Bachmann had parried Ilkay Gundogan's low effort in the 31st minute.

Silva added a third in the 63rd minute with a sumptuous strike into the top corner from just inside the box that left Bachmann rooted to the spot.

Watford substitute Hernandez reduced the arrears 11 minutes later, squeezing home from a tight angle after his drilled effort across goal struck the upright and fell back into his path, but the Hornets still slumped to a third consecutive defeat.

What does it mean? City looking ominous.
Chelsea's 3-2 defeat against West Ham left the door open for City to move to the top of the Premier League with a victory and Pep Guardiola's side duly obliged.

They move two points clear of the Blues - who slip to third - and one point ahead of Liverpool, who were briefly top after beating Wolves.

That is now seven consecutive wins for City in all competitions.

Silva on song

With seven goals in just 14 games this season, Silva has already equalled his best goalscoring return in a single Premier League campaign (seven in 36 appearances in 2018-19).

The playmaker's five goals in his past eight Premier League appearances is as many as he managed in his previous 61 games in the competition.

Sterling happy facing Hornets

Sterling's early opener means the England forward has now scored 11 times against Watford. Bournemouth are the only side he has scored against that many times.

Key Opta Facts

- City are unbeaten in 19 meetings with Watford in all competitions (W17 D2), scoring 62 goals in that run. The only longer unbeaten run they have had against a club was the 22 against Norwich City from 1965-1981.

- Watford have failed to keep a clean sheet in 25 Premier League matches, the longest run of any side in the competition since Burnley's 29-game run between November 2009 and August 2014.

- Kyle Walker has now been victorious in 100 of his 130 Premier League appearances for City, in addition to winning 102 games in the top flight with Tottenham. He is just the third player to win 100 or more Premier League games with two different sides after Ashley Cole (140 with Chelsea, 100 with Arsenal) and Phil Neville (175 with Manchester United, 105 with Everton).

- Guardiola has won all 10 of his managerial meetings with Watford in all competitions by an aggregate score of 42-4, his best 100 per cent winning record against any side.

What's next?

Watford face Brentford away from home on Friday, while City travel to Germany to play RB Leipzig on Tuesday before hosting Wolves on Saturday.

Barcelona 0-1 Real Betis: Juanmi gives Xavi his first defeat by sundaysamuel381(m) : 8:40 am On Dec 05, 2021

Xavi had his first taste of defeat as Barcelona boss with Juanmi securing Real Betis a famous 1-0 victory at Camp Nou on Saturday.

Barca defeated Espanyol and Villarreal in their first two LaLiga matches under Xavi, which came either side of a goalless draw at home to Benfica in the Champions League.

The lacked a serious attacking threat against Betis and were punished on the break by Juanmi with 11 minutes remaining.

Ez Abde missed a glorious chance to salvage a point for the Blaugrana, who could find themselves seven points adrift of the top four and 16 off top spot if Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid win later in the day.
Philippe Coutinho sent a tame effort from Jordi Alba's cross towards the near post in the 11th minute and Rui Silva held it at the second attempt.

Gavi had to go off after the ball was kicked against his head by Hector Bellerin, meaning his status for the crunch Champions League clash with Bayern Munich in midweek could now be in doubt.

After Juanmi had a goal disallowed for a narrow offside decision, Xavi sent Frenkie de Jong and Ousmane Dembele on with Barca toiling.

Dembele was lively but could not find the target and Betis put them to the sword with a swift break that finished with Juanmi sliding home a pass from former Barca winger Cristian Tello.

Barca pushed for a winner but Ez Abde blazed their best opportunity over from eight yards with 10 minutes remaining.

Ronald Araujo was deemed to have fouled Andres Guardado despite appealing for a stoppage-time penalty, leaving Xavi to cope with the bitter taste of a first defeat.
What does it mean? Big task awaits Barca

Xavi was unable to become just the fifth Barca boss this century to win his first three LaLiga games at the helm. Tito Vilanova, Gerardo Martino, Luis Enrique and Ernesto Valverde are the only coaches to achieve the feat.

The Blaugrana laboured against Betis, who managed to keep a clean sheet in a league game against Barca for the first time since September 2002. They won 3-0 on that occasion, when Xavi made his 100th LaLiga appearance.

The Barca boss will need to quickly lift the spirits of his team as their Champions League campaign remains in the balance – only a win against Bayern can guarantee their place in the last 16.

Quiet Depay

Memphis Depay had scored in eight of his prior 14 LaLiga appearances this season, but he failed to register a single attempt on goal against Betis. He did, however, supply two key passes.

Milestone for Alba

Jordi Alba became the 15th player to make 400 competitive appearances for Barca. He would have marked the occasion with an assist had Coutinho got more power on his cross early in the first half.

What's next?

Barca will be playing for their place in the Champions League when host Bayern on Wednesday, while Betis travel to Celtic in the Europa League on Thursday.

West Ham stun Chelsea with comeback victory by sundaysamuel381(m) : 8:55 am On Dec 05, 2021

West Ham United twice came from behind to earn a stunning 3-2 victory over Chelsea following a difficult day for Blues goalkeeper Edouard Mendy in the Premier League clash at the London Stadium on Saturday.

The hosts, who have already beaten Liverpool this campaign but came into the match with no wins in their past three matches, twice came from behind to ensure a share of the points.
Thomas Tuchel's side were dominant early on and took a deserved lead when Thiago Silva headed in Mason Mount's corner on 23 minutes.

And just moments later, Silva was the hero at the other end as he used his experience to stop Vladimir Coufal's effort on the line.

Despite Chelsea's superiority, West Ham were given a chance to go level five minutes before half-time when Mendy failed to clear Jorginho's backpass and fouled Jarrod Bowen in the process.

Referee Andre Marriner pointed to the spot and Manuel Lanzini sent Mendy the wrong way to make it 1-1.
But West Ham failed to go into the break ahead as Mount put Chelsea 2-1 ahead with a stunning close-range volley following a delightful cross from Hakim Ziyech.

David Moyes' team were a different side after the interval and again equalised on 58 minutes as Bowen powered an effort past Mendy after picking up Michail Antonio's knockdown.

And with the game petering out for a draw, Arthur Masuaku caught Mendy out at his near post with three minutes remaining with what appeared to be a mishit cross but found its way into the back of the net.
The defeat marked the first time this season Chelsea had conceded more than one goal in a Premier League match.

"It is impossible to make so many mistakes and expect a result," Tuchel said after the match.

Despite the win, Moyes said he was unconvinced by his side's performance. He told BT Sport: "It was very fortunate the goal, let's not kid ourselves. Truthfully I didn't think we played that well today, but we got the goals."

Fluffy Mashed Potatoes by sundaysamuel381(m) : 9:27 am On Dec 05, 2021

For the silkiest fluffy mashed potatoes, start with firm, cool Russet Burbank spuds, also known as baking potatoes. They’re the easiest to mash without becoming pasty and are even tastier steamed instead of boiled. Boiling potatoes can leave them waterlogged, diluting their earthy subtle sweetness, but steaming them preserves their inherent flavor. As the potatoes soften, they absorb just the right amount of moisture. Seasoning the dish only at the very end heightens their intrinsic subtle sweetness. If you have a ricer, use it for an exceptionally smooth texture: Press the steamed potatoes through the ricer back into the pot, then gently fold in the butter and milk with a wooden spoon or flexible spatula.
INGREDIENTS
3 pounds russet potatoes
1 cup whole milk, plus more as needed
½ cup cold salted butter, cut into pats
Salt
Freshly ground white or black pepper
¼ cup heavy cream, plus more as needed (optional)
PREPARATION
Prepare a steamer: Arrange an insert or basket (or a large colander, if you have neither) in a large pot, and add enough water to come just below the base of the steamer. Bring water to a boil over medium-high heat.
Rinse potatoes well, then peel. Rinse again, then cut into 1-inch chunks. Spread evenly in the steamer, cover, reduce heat to medium and steam until the potatoes are very tender, 20 to 25 minutes. A fork should slide easily into a piece and break it without effort. Turn off the stove, carefully remove the steamer insert and drain the water from the pot. Pour the potatoes back into the pot and spread evenly.
Let the potatoes stand until their surfaces are dry, about 3 minutes. Meanwhile, heat the milk in a small saucepan over medium-high until steaming, then keep warm over low. Set the potatoes over low heat and mash thoroughly with a dinner fork. Add about one-quarter of the milk and mash until the milk is incorporated.
Scatter the butter evenly over the potatoes and mash in until all traces of butter disappear. Add half of the remaining milk and mash to incorporate, then add the rest of the milk and gently whip until smooth, circling the fork as if beating eggs. If you don’t want your mashed potatoes so thick, beat in more milk. Sprinkle with salt and pepper, taste, and season more if you’d like.
Serve immediately, keep warm over low heat for up to 1 hour, or transfer to airtight containers and refrigerate for up to 2 days. Mashed potatoes thicken as they cool, so they need cream to regain the right consistency. If kept warm, gently mash in heavy cream until smooth and loose again, adding more if you’d like. If cold, heat the cream in a large pot until steaming, then add the potatoes. Gently mash and whip, adding more cream as needed, until heated through and fluffy. Season to taste again before serving.

Vinicius Junior makes LaLiga history as he strikes again for Real Madrid by sundaysamuel381(m) : 10:05 am On Dec 05, 2021

Vinicius Junior ticked off another landmark achievement as the Real Madrid attacker became the first player born in 2000 or later to hit 10 goals in a LaLiga season.

The 21-year-old Brazilian, born on July 12, 2000, continued his highly impressive start to the campaign with a classy opener against Real Sociedad on Saturday.

He played a clever one-two with Luka Jovic before striking a powerful shot low into the left corner to put Madrid 1-0 up after 47 minutes at the Reale Arena.

It was his 10th goal in 16 games in LaLiga this season, underlining the progress he has made under Carlo Ancelotti this term.

In his first three seasons at Madrid, Vinicius scored a total of eight goals across 82 LaLiga appearances, albeit starting only 43 of those games.

That includes three league goals last season when Zinedine Zidane was in charge.
Vinicius, fast emerging as one of the most exciting talents in Europe, has scored four goals in his past three away games in LaLiga.

CNN Fires Chris Cuomo Amid Inquiry Into His Efforts to Aid His Brother by sundaysamuel381(m) : 5:21 pm On Dec 05, 2021

The network said it had “terminated him, effective immediately,” a move that came days after a lawyer for a former colleague accused the host of sexual misconduct.
The star anchor Chris Cuomo was fired by CNN on Saturday, completing a stunning downfall for the network’s top-rated host amid a continuing inquiry into his efforts to help his brother, Andrew M. Cuomo, then the governor of New York, stave off sexual harassment accusations.

The anchor was suspended on Tuesday after testimony and text messages released by the New York attorney general revealed a more intimate and engaged role in his brother’s political affairs than the network said it had previously known.

On Wednesday, Debra S. Katz, a prominent employment lawyer, informed CNN of a client with an allegation of sexual misconduct against Chris Cuomo. Ms. Katz said in a statement on Saturday that the allegation against the anchor, which was made by a former junior colleague at another network, was “unrelated to the Gov. Andrew Cuomo matter.”
t was not fully clear what role the allegation played in CNN’s decision to dismiss Mr. Cuomo. Ms. Katz is also the lawyer for Charlotte Bennett, a onetime aide to Andrew Cuomo who accused the former governor in February of sexual harassment.
Asked about the new allegation, a CNN spokeswoman said in a statement on Saturday night: “Based on the report we received regarding Chris’s conduct with his brother’s defense, we had cause to terminate. When new allegations came to us this week, we took them seriously, and saw no reason to delay taking immediate action.”

A spokesman for Mr. Cuomo, Steven Goldberg, said in a statement on Saturday, “These apparently anonymous allegations are not true.”
Ms. Katz said that her client “came forward because she was disgusted by Chris Cuomo’s on-air statements in response to the allegations made against his brother, Gov. Andrew Cuomo.” Ms. Katz cited a March 1 broadcast in which Chris Cuomo said: “I have always cared very deeply about these issues, and profoundly so. I just wanted to tell you that.”
Mr. Cuomo’s spokesman responded that the former anchor “fully stands by his on-air statements about his connection to these issues, both professionally and in a profoundly personal way. If the goal in making these false and unvetted accusations was to see Mr. Cuomo punished by CNN, that may explain his unwarranted termination.”

Earlier on Saturday, CNN said it had “retained a respected law firm to conduct a review” of the anchor’s involvement with Andrew Cuomo’s political team. “While in the process of that review, additional information has come to light,” CNN said. “Despite the termination, we will investigate as appropriate.”
As the gregarious and sometimes combative host of CNN’s 9 p.m. hour, Mr. Cuomo was at the peak of a broadcast journalism career that he had forged outside of his famed political family. But it was the troubles of his brother, who resigned the governorship in August, that ultimately embroiled Mr. Cuomo in a controversy that appeared to precipitate his dismissal.

“This is not how I want my time at CNN to end but I have already told you why and how I helped my brother,” Chris Cuomo said in a statement earlier on Saturday. “So let me now say as disappointing as this is, I could not be more proud of the team at Cuomo Prime Time and the work we did as CNN’s #1 show in the most competitive time slot.”

Until last month, Mr. Cuomo had enjoyed the support of CNN’s president, Jeff Zucker, and he faced no discipline for his behind-the-scenes strategizing with Andrew Cuomo’s political aides, a breach of basic journalistic norms.
But documents released on Nov. 29 revealed that the anchor offered advice on Andrew Cuomo’s public statements and made efforts to uncover the status of pending articles at other news outlets, including The New Yorker and Politico, concerning harassment allegations against his brother.

Mr. Zucker — who had been steadfast in backing Mr. Cuomo, at one point saying the anchor was “human” and facing “very unique circumstances” — informed the anchor on Saturday that he was being fired. “It goes without saying that these decisions are not easy, and there are a lot of complex factors involved,” Mr. Zucker wrote in a memo to CNN staff.
The spectacle of a high-profile anchor advising his powerful politician brother amid scandal was a longstanding headache for many CNN journalists, who privately expressed discomfort at actions that, in their view, compromised the network’s credibility. The CNN anchor Jake Tapper went public with his concerns in May, telling The New York Times that his colleague had “put us in a bad spot,” adding, “I cannot imagine a world in which anybody in journalism thinks that that was appropriate.”

Even so, the timing of Mr. Cuomo’s firing, on a Saturday at 5 p.m., caught many members of the CNN newsroom off guard.
The network’s decision earlier in the week to suspend Mr. Cuomo had left open the possibility that he might return to the channel at a later date. CNN’s chief media correspondent, Brian Stelter, speculated on air on Wednesday that it was “possible he’ll be back in January.”

The network said on Tuesday it would begin an internal review of Mr. Cuomo’s conduct. But its executives had not immediately planned to hire an outside law firm, according to a person familiar with the network’s internal decision-making process. That plan changed in recent days, and CNN declined on Saturday to identify the name of the law firm it had retained.
Before joining CNN, Mr. Cuomo spent years as an on-air correspondent, covering wildfires, shooting rampages and war zones, most prominently at ABC News. He was one of Mr. Zucker’s first major hires after he became CNN’s president in 2013. A morning show, “New Day,” was organized in part around Mr. Cuomo’s bombastic, fast-talking on-air personality.

The awkwardness of his relationship with Andrew Cuomo — who was among the most powerful Democratic politicians in the country — became apparent almost immediately: In 2013, the network was criticized after Chris Cuomo twice interviewed his brother on “New Day.”

In 2018, Mr. Cuomo moved to prime-time, beating out other prominent hosts like Mr. Tapper for the coveted 9 p.m. slot. “Cuomo Prime Time” became CNN’s highest-rated hour, although it regularly attracted fewer viewers than competitors on Fox News and MSNBC.
At the onset of the pandemic, Andrew Cuomo became a leading national figure in the government response. Chris Cuomo began interviewing his brother in prime time, and their teasing banter and emotional conversations became a hit with viewers. Ratings surged further after Chris Cuomo contracted the coronavirus; he continued broadcasting, and interviewing his brother, from quarantine in the basement of his Long Island home. Mr. Zucker praised the segments for their “authenticity and relatability and vulnerability.”

“That’s what the brothers Cuomo are giving us right now,” Mr. Zucker told The Times in April 2020.

The next year, as Andrew Cuomo was facing an increasing number of sexual harassment accusations, Chris Cuomo recused himself from reporting on the scandal, leaving a prime-time hole in CNN’s coverage of what was turning out to be a national news story.
At the same time, away from the anchor desk, Chris Cuomo was participating in strategy sessions with the governor’s top aides. It also emerged that Andrew Cuomo had arranged for his brother’s Covid tests to receive priority treatment by the state. CNN did not discipline Chris Cuomo, and at one point offered the anchor a leave of absence if he wished to more formally help his brother.

After Andrew Cuomo resigned, Chris Cuomo defended himself on the Aug. 16 episode of his program. “I’m not an adviser, I’m a brother,” the anchor said. “I never attacked nor encouraged anyone to attack any woman who came forward. I never made calls to the press about my brother’s situation.”

But the new batch of testimony and text messages suggested that Mr. Cuomo did function as an adviser and did reach out to journalists. “When asked, I would reach out to sources, other journalists, to see if they had heard of anybody else coming out,” he told investigators.
In September, another former colleague, Shelley Ross, who had worked with Mr. Cuomo at ABC News, described an instance when the anchor touched her inappropriately at a gathering in 2005. In an essay published in the opinion section of The Times, Ms. Ross wrote that Mr. Cuomo “greeted me with a strong bear hug while lowering one hand to firmly grab and squeeze the cheek of my buttock.”

In a response published by The Times as part of the essay, Mr. Cuomo said: “As Shelley acknowledges, our interaction was not sexual in nature. It happened 16 years ago in a public setting when she was a top executive at ABC. I apologized to her then, and I meant it.”
Ms. Ross had been Mr. Cuomo’s boss at ABC News before the incident she described; at the gathering, she wrote, Mr. Cuomo told her, “I can do this now that you’re no longer my boss.” She wrote that she was inspired to publish the essay partly because Mr. Cuomo had “escaped accountability” for advising his brother while working as a CNN news anchor, and also because of the statements he had made on March 1, in which he spoke of caring “very deeply” about the issue of sexual harassment.

Enugu police arrest two brothers over defilement of nine-year-old by sundaysamuel381(m) : 12:46 am On Dec 06, 2021

Police have arrested and are investigating the case of two brothers, Chima and Michael Nnamani, for their alleged involvement in the serial raping of a nine-year-old girl in an Enugu community.

The two brothers, who are from the same biological parents, hail and live within the Akpawfu community in Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Daniel Ndukwe, confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria in Enugu on Saturday.

“The case-file and suspects involved in the case of an alleged defilement of a nine-year-old have all been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Enugu, for conclusive investigation,” he said.
However, the Founder of Women Aid Collective, Prof. Joy Ezeilo, had called for the immediate prosecution of the two suspects arrested for allegedly defiling the minor.

Ezeilo made the call in a statement made available to NAN in Enugu.

The statement read in part, “On November 28, 2021, WACOL received a case of defilement of a nine-year-old girl by two brothers from the same biological parents, Chima Nnamani and Michael Nnamani, from Akpawfu community.
“The accused persons had been allegedly arrested for serially violating a nine-year-old relative living with them. While narrating her ordeal in the hands of these perpetrators, the victim mentioned how this heinous act perpetrated against her body started immediately when she arrived to live with them in their place of abode and had continued daily especially in the morning hours.”

Ezeilo added that the none-year-old girl stated that she often bled profusely afterwards, yet no one offered her any help or treatment.
“The victim added that she had complained to her aunty, Mrs Theresa Nnamani, who happened to be her father’s stepsister about the wicked act but she remained adamant because these perpetrators were her biological sons.

“She said that her aunty had returned home unexpectedly in one of the fateful days and witnessed the incident where her sons were sexually abusing her yet she did nothing to end the sexual abuses.

“The child was brought to WACOL by Good Samaritans who disclosed that the child complained of severe pains, and when they probed further she confided in them about her ordeal in her aunty’s house,” Ezeilo said.
Following the report, WACOL petitioned the Nigerian Police, Garki, Awkunanaw in Enugu, which led to the arrest of Michael and his brother, Chima Nnamani, who is a student of the University of Uyo.

“WACOL, therefore, urges the Nigerian Police to expedite action on the matter by charging the case to court as required under the Criminal Law of Enugu State and the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law of Enugu State,” Ezeilo stated.

The immediate past National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress and former governor of Edo State, Mr Adams Oshiomhole, has expressed shock at the death of Madam Maria Igbinedion, mother of his predecessor, Mr Lucky Igbinedion.

In a statement released to the press by his media aide, Victor Oshioke, Oshiomhole asked Igbinedion to be comforted with the fact that the late matriarch who died lately at the age of 85 years old lived a fulfilled life.

The former APC chair said, “Mama was known to be a very peaceful and empathic person who sympathized with those that suffered misfortune, gave encouragement to those in despair and shared whatever she had with those in need within her community.

“It is pertinent therefore that at this very traumatic period for your family, we also share in your pain.
“As mortals, it is difficult to come to terms with the loss of such a kind-hearted, deeply pious and beneficent matriarch, who in spite of her age, was still full of life and a veritable bastion of support for her children and the entire community.

“Your mother may not have lived till the fullness of our desires for her life, yet she lived a fulfilled life of service to humanity through her numerous community engagements, nurtured her children to greatness and had a good relationship with God.
“On behalf of my family, I offer our sincere condolences at this most challenging time while praying that mama finds eternal rest in heaven.

Osoba hosts senators in London, urges Buhari to sign electoral bill by sundaysamuel381(m) : 1:08 am On Dec 06, 2021

A former governor of Ogun State, Chief Olusegun Osoba, has urged the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd), to sign the 2010 Electoral Act (amendment) Bill 2021, into law.

He supported the direct primary method as a means of selecting candidates of all political parties as contained in the newly passed law.

Osoba stated this in London when a delegation of senators across political party lines and geopolitical zones of Nigeria visited him on Friday. The lawmakers were in London to wish Osoba, a speedy recovery from a recent knee surgery.

He appealed to Buhari to sign the amended Electoral Act because he, (the president) was a product of direct primary.
The delegation comprises; Senator Solomon Adeola (APC, Lagos West), Senator Kashim Shetima (APC, Borno Central), Senator Isah Jubril(APC, Kogi East), Senator Micheal Nnachi(PDP, Ebonyi South), Senator Ayo Akinyelure (PDP, Ondo Central), and Senator Gershon Bassey(PDP, Cross River South).

Others are, Senator Yusuf Abubakar Yusuf (APC, Taraba Central), Senator Sadiq Sulaiman Umar(APC, Kwara North), Senator Tokunbo Abiru(APC, Lagos East) Senator Bashiru Ajibola(APC, Osun Central) and Senator Hassan Mohamed Gusau(APC, Zamfara Central).

Osoba said, “I have a feeling he (Buhari), will sign it. The president himself is a product of direct primary. He submitted himself to direct primary in 2019 throughout the country and heaven did not fall.
“After he subjected himself to direct primary throughout Nigeria in all the wards, he also subjected himself to a National Convention to ratify his election at the primary.

“Quote me, I had cause to tell him at our national caucus during Edo election issue that ‘Mr President, if you can subject yourself to direct primary and national convention, I do not see why anybody should be afraid of direct primary.’

“I said this to him and we must be honest when we are talking to our leaders. That is why I believe that the President been a product of direct primary will sign the law for direct primary.”
Adeola, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance said members of the Senate were in London and decided to pay Osoba, a get well quick visit.

The Senator said Osoba’s wealth of experience was needed as Nigeria forge ahead in difficult times.

He said, ” It is gratifying to see that he (Osoba) is recovering fast from his surgery. This is evident as he personally received us at the door. From the first floor and going back up with us to the sitting room upstairs.”

Shetimma who spoke on behalf of other senators stated that they came as Nigerians devoid of any political party or regional colouration to wish Osoba well as an elder statesman at 82.
