How banks live fat on depositors’ fund by olusegundavid66(m) : 1:46 am On Feb 05, 2020

Following the recent slashed of bank charges by the Central Bank of Nigeria, some financial institutions have restrategized. Many of them have widened the gap between lending rates and interests.

Now, interest on savings and fixed deposits was as low as 1.25% while lending rates were as high as 25%. Also, yields on treasury bills in the secondary market have fallen to between 2.5% and 4.9%. About a year ago, the yield on these securities could be as high as 12%.

What it means: With this development, the banks have created a way to make money for themselves. This means the banks are collecting the money of their customers, offering this capital to borrowers in high lending rates to make more money for the bank from the customers’ deposit but the interest rates on the savings are rather too low or insignificant.

So basically, customers are not getting value from their savings while banks are gaining much more from the savings. According to a report, a mixture movement was recorded in banks deposit rates but lending rates trended upwards in November 2019.

Also, lending rate and collateral have also led to the exclusion of most small and medium businesses despite having their savings at the banks. Small businesses are not enjoying the support of banks while the large corporations are mostly favoured for bank loans.

“The only way we can continue to make income was from interests because e-based income had dwindled and could not support operations. Now, institutions were paying very low interest on savings accounts and charging more on loans,” a source disclosed.

Also, the rector, Institute of Credit Administration, Prof Chris Onalo, said banks were in cohorts to cripple the economy. He condemned the gap between lending and savings rates.

Why will you be trading with people’s savings and the yield is so low?

“If they want to lend money to those who are in need of it, they do at a very high rate. This cripples the economy.”

This is a very gruesome act of killing millions of people that clustered in SME and MSME category.

Nigeria introduces new visa policy to attract professionals, more investments by olusegundavid66(m) : 8:38 pm On Feb 05, 2020

Nigeria has launched a new visa policy as the country is determined to boost its Ease of Doing Business rank. This was unveiled by President Muhammadu Buhari at the State House in Abuja, today.

The new visa policy was designed to attract some individuals, professionals and investments to the nation. President Buhari explained that the policy would push Nigeria’s economy towards global competitiveness.
This new Visa Policy will advance our goal of building a globally competitive economy, by helping attract Innovation, and specialized skills and knowledge from abroad, to complement locally available ones. We are sending a message to the world that Nigeria is Open for Business.

“Pleased to announce that Nigeria has a new Visa Policy, which I launched today. This new Policy will help improve our business environment, attract FDI, boost tourism, and improve African integration, without compromising national security and our territorial integrity,” President Buhari stated on his Twitter handle.

People favoured by the policy: Nairametrics learnt that the special Short Visa classes (single entry) will favour Journalists, Clerics, Sportspeople, Artists/Entertainers/Musicians, Religious Tourists, Humanitarian Workers, etc.

What it means: This means, foreigners (Africans) coming to Nigeria for a short visit, business purpose or for tourism, will be given a legal stay for up to 90 days. But the individual has to have a valid passport.

According to the Nigerian immigration, “The document contains a range of Visa administration reforms efforts aimed at simplifying processes & making Nigeria the preferred investment and tourism destination.”

Note that the new visa policy has 79 visa classifications, with the most popular being the Visa on arrival.

Nigeria’s ease of doing business: Back in October 2019, Nigeria’s ranking on the World Bank’s Ease of Doing Business increased by 15 steps from what was recorded in 2018. Nigeria, which was one of the two African countries on the list, also made the top 10 most improved economies in the world’s list, the second time in three years. This new visa policy is expected to have a positive impact on the ease of doing business in Nigeria.

FIRS boss wants to tax street traders, artisans, others by olusegundavid66(m) : 1:08 am On Feb 07, 2020

The Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Mohammed Nami, has said that tax administrators need to tax street traders, artisans and other jobs in the informal sector of the economy but politicians are frustrating the effort.

According to Nami, taxing the informal sector promotes good governance and political accountability, ensuring the informal sector has the right to request for certain services as demanded by the formal sector, which is being taxed.

Food items sell cheapest at Mile 12, as traders lament high price of local rice

“Taxing the informal sector may also be a way of promoting good governance and political accountability of the State because tax strengthens the social contract between the citizens and the government. Thus, informal businesses that contribute to tax revenues are likely to assert their rights to receive certain services from government thereby ensuring accountability,” Nami said.

The informal sector is not taxed in Nigeria. Individuals and businesses in the informal sector also known as an underground sector do not declare their income and pay no taxes on them because it is not considered as normal income sources. The sector is mostly filled with the lower class of society.

But the FIRS boss is trying to change that in a bid to expand the government’s revenue base. Nami disclosed this during the ninth Country Correspondents meeting and African Tax Administration Forum (ATAF’s) Experts meeting on taxation of the informal sector in Abuja.

His statement came at a time President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration is trying to create more revenue sources to find a solution to Nigeria’s dwindling revenue. Finance Minister Zainab Ahmed had stated that Nigeria has a revenue problem, so in Nami’s view, taxing the informal sector will be a boost to the revenue mobilisation of African countries.

Why are Politicians against it? According to Nami, the fear of losing votes is causing politicians to thwart the tax administrator’s intention to tax the informal sector. He said politicians have promised the people in the informal sector of protection from taxes in order to be elected.

Nami said, “Taxing the informal sector is viewed as politically unpopular and politicians are unwilling to risk losing the high number of votes represented in the sector. This is because politicians promise informal workers protection from taxation in exchange for their votes.”

He added that these businesses “also operate on a cash basis and maintain poor or no accounting records. Most of the businesses in the sector are also small and fragmented making it inefficient for the revenue administrations to enforce compliance.”

Danbatta Recommends Telecoms For The Growth Of Financial Inclusion In Nigeria by olusegundavid66(m) : 6:23 am On Feb 09, 2020

The Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive (EVC/CE) of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Prof. Umar Danbatta, has stated that telecommunications remain the best enabler in expanding the frontiers of financial inclusion in Nigeria.

Danbatta affirmed this today (05/02/2020) at the NCC head office while receiving a team from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) and the Foundation’s Consultants, Glenbrooks Partners, who paid a visit to the Commission to explore opportunities for collaboration and partnership to enhance financial inclusion in Nigeria.

At the meeting, which held at the request of the Foundation, Danbatta said the realization of the centrality of telecommunication to all aspects of the economy explains NCC’s upbeat in identifying access gaps and in instituting processes for the expansion of telecom infrastructure across the country. The EVC said the infrastructure companies (Infracos) have been licensed by the Commission to cascade fibre from landing ports to the hinterland of Nigeria, especially the 774 local government areas in Nigeria. He expressed hope that the Federal Government will take a concrete position soon to enable the Infracos to commence operations because “fibre is the real solution to the volume of transactions in the financial services sector”.

Danbatta declared that 35 million Nigerians have no access to telecommunications services and by implication, they lack access to digital financial services, a condition that undermines financial inclusion. According to the EVC, this challenge is caused by the inadequacy of both wireless and fibre connectivity infrastructure. “We need to do more investment in both fixed and wireless infrastructure to enable us to reach our target of at least 80 percent level of financial inclusion in about four years”, he emphasized.

The EVC said access to telecom services by distant, isolated, unserved and underserved communities will enable the more citizens to embrace the digital financial culture. Danbatta revealed that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has issued the Mobile Money Payment Services license to some mobile network operators to enable them to undertake mobile financial transaction services. Danbatta, therefore, advocated renewed greater cooperation and collaboration between the banking and telecommunications sectors to harmonise the cost of transactions for financial services in an equitable manner.

Abiodun Jagun of Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation who led the delegation comprising Elizabeth Mcquerry of Glenbrook Partners as well as Ifeanyi Monye and Charles Ifedi, who are consultants to Glenbrook, informed the EVC that the Foundation requested for the meeting in other to deepen the extant partnership between the Foundation and the Federal Government of Nigeria to increase citizens’ access to financial resources.

Jagun said the discussion with the Commission is so important because it regulates the telecom sector and it is already addressing some infrastructure challenges which is central to connectivity and the embrace of digital culture and inclusive access to financial resources by citizens.

She (Jagun) said that understanding the strides made by the Commission as well as the challenges it faces will help the Foundation to know the nature of collaboration and support to offer without distorting or disrupting the market. Jagun said the beauty of the visit and the discussions are meant to ensure that the philanthropic opportunities offered by BMGF are supportive and complementary to the digital ecosystem.

Mcquerry also commended the commitment of the Federal Government to expanding access to digital resources. She also expressed hope that this commitment will trickle down to find implementation among all agencies of government. Mcquerry equally appealed to all stakeholders to work in synergy to ensure increased access and affordability of digital and financial services by “people at the bottom of the bottom of the pyramid”.

Nigeria and Ethiopia have signed a visa waiver agreement for diplomatic and official passport holders, and a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Cooperation in the field of Defence.

President Muhammadu Buhari and prime minister Abiy Ahmed witnessed the signing of the agreement Tuesday in Addis Ababa by their ministers of foreign affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama and Gedu Andargachew, respectively, during the state visit of the Nigerian leader.

Earlier, while meeting with the Ethiopian prime minister, president Buhari had discussed how to explore new areas of collaboration to further enhance and expand Nigeria-Ethiopia bilateral cooperation for the mutual benefits of the two countries.

Garba Shehu, Senior special assistant on media and publicity, in the early hours of Wednesday, explained that the visa waiver agreement is expected to ease travels by officials and contribute to further strengthening of bilateral relations.
