Govs in joyful mood as Supreme Court rejects challengers’ cases by SamTim(m) : 9:54 am On Jan 21

The Supreme Court on Friday affirmed the election of six more governors.

The governors are Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State, Uba Sani of Kaduna; Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe; Nasir Idris of Kebbi, Dapo Abiodun of Ogun, and Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State.

The apex court had last Friday delivered judgment on Plateau, Lagos, Abia, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Benue, Zamfara, Ebonyi, and Kano governorship appeals.

This sums up the resolved election appeals to 15. In all the decided cases so far, no governor has been sacked from office.

Reading the lead judgment in the Nasarawa appeal, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun held that the appeal by David Ombugadu of the PDP lacked merit.

She, however, affirmed the election of the governor of Abdullahi Sule.

She said, “The issues in this appeal are resolved against the appellant. The appeal lacks merit and it is hereby dismissed.”

Sule was sacked as the governor by the tribunal but reinstated at the Court of Appeal.

Similarly, the apex court dismissed the appeal by the All Progressives Congress and its candidate, Ovie Omo-Agege, and the Labour Party and its candidate, Ken Pella as well as the appeal by Kenneth Gbagi of the Social Democratic Party against the Delta state governor, Sheriff Oborevwori.

In the Omo-Agege’s appeal, the five-member panel led by Justice John Okoro said the appeal lacked merit and the appellant was unable to discharge the burden of proof placed on him.

Okoro held that subtracting the total number of votes mentioned in the result sheets complained about by Omo-Agege wouldn’t be sufficient to remove the governor from office.

Gbagi and Pella’s appeals were dismissed for lack of merit.

The court of appeal in Lagos had affirmed the election of Sheriff Oborevwori as the governor of Delta state, dismissing the appeals by the governorship candidates and their parties.

Liz Anjorin, my estranged husband harassing me — Folashade Sariyu by SamTim(m) : 9:59 am On Jan 21

Folashade Sariyu speaks with TOFARATI IGE about the alleged harassment from her estranged husband, Lateef Lawal, and his new wife and actress, Liz Anjorin

What is your relationship with Lateef Lawal, Liz Anjorin’s husband?

He is married to me. We had both a traditional and Muslim wedding, popularly known as Nikkai, in 2017 at my father’s house in Ota, Ogun State. When I met him, he did not have any other wife in his house. He told me he had issues with the two wives (he had married earlier). I then told him that if he wanted me to marry him, he should go back to his wives (and settle their issues). And, he promised to do that. Before I met him, I already had two children, though their father is late.

As our relationship went on, I got pregnant and gave birth to our first child together, called Lateefa on May 30, 2017. I gave birth to the second child, Kadijat, on March 5, 2020, and we did not have any fight. As a matter of fact, my senior wives and I usually talked, and we related well, to the extent that their children usually visited me and my kids too visited them.

How and when did he get married to Liz?

My husband just left the house one day, and told me he was going to work. For about three days after leaving the house, he usually called me and said he was at work. However, I was shocked when I read online that he got married to an actress, Liz Anjorin. At that time, I was nursing a three-months-old, so I wasn’t conversant with happenings online. People just started calling me, and told me to check Gistlover (a blog) that it reported the news of Lateef’s wedding to Liz. I even told them that it could not be my husband. When I finally checked it, I realised that he was the one, so I started calling him but he did not take my calls. I even sent his friends to him all to no avail. It was after eight months that I was able to get through to him. Meanwhile, he only responded because I had said I was fed up with the whole issue and would expose him online, because I did not want to die in silence. I was the only one taking care of the children, yet I would go online and be seeing their father with a wealthy actress, eating and spending lavishly. My children are not even going to school anymore, because I could not afford the fees.

PDP supporters protest supreme court verdict upholding Sule as Nasarawa governor by SamTim(m) : 10:02 am On Jan 21

Members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Nasarawa state have staged a protest against the Supreme Court decision that upheld the election of Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State.

Shortly after the Supreme Court upheld the election of Abdullahi Sule of the APC, supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party candidate in the election, David Ombugadu blocked the Lafia -Jos road of the state to express their displeasure over the verdict.

The protest later led to a blockade of roads and burning of tires which led to shops and business centres including schools within the Lafia metropolis being closed.

The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed the appeal of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate David Umbugadu against the election of Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State.

The panel of justices in a unanimous decision dismissed it for lack of merit. On October 2, the Election Petition Tribunal in Lafia nullified Governor Sule’s victory and declared David Ombugadu as the winner of the poll.

Consequently, Governor Sule and the All Progressives Congress (APC) sought to overturn the verdict by appealing the judgment of the tribunal. The court of appeal in its judgment on November 23, faulted the verdict of the tribunal and affirmed Sule’s election as governor.

The appeal court upheld that the tribunal relied on legally inadmissible evidence to declare Ombugadu as the winner of the March 18 poll.

According to the appellate court, the tribunal wrongly relied on the evidence of eight of the PDP witnesses whose statements on oath were not front-loaded alongside the petition.
