Amaechi: From hero to zero

These are not the best of times for Rt. Hon. Chibuke Amaechi. Though he is the campaign manager of the president, whatever is the outcome would surely not soothe the bitter pill he is being forced to swallow in his native Rivers State.

Amaechi is among the handful of political office holders in the country who have held one office or the other since the advent of the Fourth Republic. That is apart from the five months he spent in exile while his cousin, Celestine Omehia held the office of governor.
As Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly for eight straight years, (a record unmatched either in the state or nationally), as two-term governor of the state, and now as minister of transportation, he was able to build a formidable political capacity. It was one that many of his contemporaries of yore in the old National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS could only have envied.
His capacity for leadership was not only shown in his unbroken tenure as speaker and governor but was also manifested with the network he built as chairman of the Conference of Speakers and chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum.
Why Rivers APC Crisis Will Not End Now – Abe
The relationship he built among the speakers has rubbed off positively (or negatively for some) in the enthronement of Simon Lalong as governor of Plateau State. Amaechi it is generally believed was the one who made his former fellow speaker governor on the plateau. He was also believed to have despite the opposition of some powerful Southwest leaders brought in his former fellow Speaker, Olurunimbe Mamora as his deputy in running the Buhari campaign in 2014.
Even as governor of Rivers State, especially before he started carrying brooms about, his performance as governor was outstanding. So alluring were his performances in health, education, and agriculture that Rivers State during his tenure became a point of reference for many state governors.
The Amaechi schools as they were called, for example, compared to the best one could find even outside the country.
Against the background of the seemingly sterling service rendered to his state, the determination of some to turn the former governor into an object of political spectacle calls for concern.
Though he is the campaign manager of the president, it is trite to say that whatever is the result will still leave him in a sour mood today as he ponders the fate of his disciples in the four years ahead as they again wander in the wilderness in Rivers State.
After nearly 20 years of playing at the top echelon of the politics of the state and grooming several disciples, it is a pity that Amaechi’s political heritage is today edging towards despair. Former aides like Nyesom Wike and Magnus Abe now delight in making him a spectacle for all to see.
The decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC to bar the All Progressives Congress, APC from all elective positions in the state is a significant blow to Amaechi’s political heritage.
Indeed, his assertion that 80% of the political actors in Rivers State may have passed through his political tutelage may not be taken as too much of a boast given his antecedents. Even if half or a third of that figure is correct, it means that about a third of the political actors in his state will be of no significant relevance in driving policy, programmes or politics in the state in the foreseeable future.
As Nigerians everywhere go to the polls to ponder on whether they are better today than they were four years ago, the people of Rivers State would have no opportunity of bringing Amaechi’s APC as a political variable. No thanks to a former disciple in the person of Senator Magnus Abe.
Not too long ago it looked so promising for Amaechi as he prepared to pay back Governor Nyesom Wike with the same measure he, Wike and Mrs. Patience Jonathan did to him four years ago.

A test run of that was ably done in the National Assembly re-run election that returned Senator Abe to the National Assembly in 2017. At that time the two men were on the same page and were as such able to get away with whatever anti-democratic nuances that characterized that election. Today, both men are on opposite sides as aspiration is squelched with authority with Amaechi losing the grandeur and grace that once made him the poster boy for his contemporaries.

Coming up this week, Barcelona is away to Napoli in the round of 16 of the Champions League and Real Madrid in El Clásico.

Since turning 30, Messi has averaged 0.90 goals per game. If he can maintain that level, it is very possible that he can pass the 700 goals mark for Barcelona and 800+ in total is also a realistic target.

But where would that put Messi in the all-time list of goalscorers?

That is a more difficult question than it might seem. The biggest issue is verifying some records attributed to certain players, particularly prior to World War 2. It is difficult enough to separate the chaff from the wheat in Europe let alone the world. Even a soccer-crazy nation like Brazil has struggled to validate record claims.

An accepted source of expertise is the RSSSF (Soccer Statistics Foundation). RSSSF’s record keeping includes games played at the age-group international levels and in recognized domestic leagues. This makes the numbers a bit higher than the ones usually quoted by journalists and pundits.

The highest goalscorer of all-time? According to RSSSF that would be Josef Bican who scored 805 goals - or more? - in a career that lasted from 1931-1955. Romario, Pele, Puskas come next and Cristiano Ronaldo completes the top 5.

The great Gerd Mueller separates Ronaldo and Messi. Messi and Ronaldo are the only two active players in the top 15 and, it would appear, both have a fantastic chance of passing Bican’s 805 goals......or more.

RSSSF credits Ronaldo with 743 career goals to date and Messi with 723. (There is an age difference to consider with Messi younger by 18 months.)

Nevertheless, Ronaldo is showing no signs of slacking off. He’s scored 25 goals for Juventus in 30 games this season. Since he turned 30, Ronaldo has also scored at a rate of 0.90 goals per game while playing for Real Madrid and Juventus.

At his present scoring rate Ronaldo could hit 800+ in around 60 games or the equivalent of less than 2 normal seasons.

It is worth remembering that over the next 24 months, in addition to the normal domestic competitions, there is the European Championships (Cristiano Ronaldo), and the Copa America (Lionel Messi) this summer, followed by World Cup qualifying for and then the 2022 World Cup.

Lots of games and chances for both Ronaldo and Messi if they can avoid injury.

The death toll in Nigeria from an outbreak of Lassa fever has risen to 70 as confirmed cases shot up, according to authorities.

The National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), the Nigerian agency responsible for the management of disease outbreaks, said in its week six update on Thursday that eight new deaths from Lassa fever were reported in three states.

"Four new healthcare workers were affected in Ondo, Delta and Kaduna states," the NCDC said in the update.

It said the number of suspected cases has "increased significantly" compared with the situation in mid-January, from more than 700 to 1,708.

Confirmed cases have also shot up to 472, it said.

Lassa fever is a disease spread to humans through food or household items contaminated with rodent urine or faeces.

In 80 percent of cases, the fever is asymptomatic, but for some, the symptoms include high fever, headache, mouth ulcers, muscle aches, haemorrhaging under the skin and heart and kidney failure.

It has an incubation period of between six and 21 days and can be transmitted through contact with an infected person via bodily fluids and excretion.

Effective treatment
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the antiviral drug ribavirin appears to be an effective treatment for Lassa fever "if given early on in the course of the clinical illness".

Nigeria, Africa's most populous nation with about 200 million people, has five laboratories with the capability to diagnose the disease.

Lassa fever belongs to the same family as the Ebola and Marburg viruses but is much less deadly.

The disease is endemic to the West African country and its name comes from the town of Lassa in northern Nigeria where it was first identified in 1969.

It infects between 100,000 and 300,000 people in the region every year with about 5,000 deaths, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Previously, cases of the disease have been reported in Sierra Leone, Liberia, Togo and Benin.

The number of cases usually climbs in January due to weather conditions during the dry season.

At least 30 people have been killed in an attack in northeastern Nigeria, according to officials.

The attack on Sunday evening targeted the village of Auno on a key highway linking to Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state.

The attackers stormed in on trucks mounted with heavy weapons, killing, burning and looting before kidnapping women and children, state government spokesman Ahmad Abdurrahman Bundi said.

They "killed not less than 30 people who are mostly motorists and destroyed 18 vehicles", Bundi said in a statement after visiting the scene.

Babakura Kolo, a member of a state-backed militia battling fighters in the area, said travellers who had stopped for the night came under attack by the gunmen who torched vehicles.

"Many of the drivers and their assistants who were sleeping in the vehicles were burnt alive," said Babakura Kolo, a member of a state-backed militia battling fighters in the area.

The attackers combed through the village, looting and burning shops and property before withdrawing, he said.

Kolo told the AFP news agency the fighters took away three buses carrying women and children to Maiduguri which had parked in the village for the night.

"We still don't know how many women and children they took away but the number is huge," he said.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.

Auno lies on the 120km (75-mile) highway linking Maiduguri to Damaturu, a major regional city in neighbouring Yobe state.

The highway has been increasingly targeted by the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) group in recent months. In 2016, ISWAP split from the Boko Haram armed group, which has waged a decade-long armed campaign in northeast Nigeria that has killed tens of thousands and displaced millions from their homes.

The violence has spread to neighbouring Niger, Chad and Cameroon, prompting the creation of a regional military coalition to fight the attackers.

The United Nations has complained of a surge of violent attacks in recent weeks across the conflict zone.

The increase comes after the Nigerian army last year launched a new strategy that saw it withdraw troops from remote bases into larger so-called "super camps".

The military says the tactic has helped to stem attacks but local residents and aid workers say it appears to have bolstered the attackers by leaving vast swaths of territory unprotected.

Last month, four Nigerian soldiers were killed and seven wounded in an attack in Auno.

Femi Fani-Kayode, former Aviation Minister, on Monday said the Southern part of the country was more interested in restructuring than 2023 presidency.

Fani-Kayode made the remark in response to the Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai’s comment that the Southern part of the country should be allowed to produce Nigeria’s next president.

El-Rufai had suggested that the Southern part of the country should be allowed to produce President Muhammadu Buhari’s successor in 2023.

The governor, who is a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, had said that the North had no reason to hold onto power at the end of Buhari’s second tenure.

“But as a group, the Northern APC will have to sit down and endorse someone, most likely someone from the South, because after eight years of Buhari, I don’t think the Presidency should remain in the north unless there is some extenuating circumstances. But all things being equal, we will honour our agreement and we keep our words,” El-Rufai had said.

However, the former Minister insisted that the Southern part of the country was interested in their freedom.

In a tweet, he described Nigeria’s presidency as “accursed.”

“To those that seek to appease us by saying that they may concede the Presidency to the south in 2023 I say this. The south is more interested in restructuring or outright independence than the Presidency. Give us our freedom and keep your accursed Presidency,” he tweeted.
