Can Malt And Milk Give You Blood? by Halicutie(f) : 7:50 am On Jun 27, 2019

What a myth!
*Can Malt and Milk give You Blood? Nigerian Doctor Explains*
By Chinonso Egemba - June 23, 2019

A Nigerian doctor by name Olufunmilayo decided to break the myth concerning the practice among Nigerians taking a Malt and Milk drink in the hopes that it will help replenish their blood levels.

Is there any truth to this?

it all started when a random twitter user by name Accidental Engineer posted a picture of a tin of peak milk and Maltina with the caption “Sco Pa Tu Manaa” to which Doctor Olufunmilayo quoted saying

“This is not a blood tonic This is not a blood tonic This is not a blood tonic. This is not a blood tonic. This is not a blood tonic. This is not a blood tonic. In case this is not clear enough: *THIS IS NOT A BLOOD TONIC* . It is a myth and a lie. There’s no truth to it. AT ALL.”
he further went in the thread to explain

“Okay let’s analyse this a bit further. Let’s look at the content list for Peak Milk and Maltina. I just took a picture of Peak Milk tin in my kitchen and downloaded an internet page on the contents of Maltina- let’s look at what they contain. Look at the following images.

“So according to that image, Each 100g of Peak Milk contains 28.3g of Fat (of which 19g is “saturated fat” which is actually bad fat- very bad medically for your heart). 37.1g carbohydrates. 25g protein. 506 kilocalories of energy. And the rest are salt, vitamin A and D.”

“So essentially Peak Milk is mainly fats, carbohydrates and protein. “Blood tonics” need to be rich in IRON- that is easily absorbable by the body- because this is what your body needs and uses to make blood! And unfortunately, Peak Milk has NONE of that. There is NO Iron in it.”

“So what am I saying in essence, for ANYTHING to “give you blood” or help you build blood- it has to be a rich source of IRON- because that’s what your body needs to build blood. That’s why when you blood is low, doctors give you IRON Sulfate capsules which you take for it.”

“And that’s why ANYTHING that would be considered a “blood tonic” MUST BE a rich source of Iron. Look at these images of actual blood tonics and see that they are ALL rich sources of Iron and that is stated on the pack. So IF something is NOT rich in Iron, it can NOT give blood.”

“So does that make sense so far? IF it is NOT rich in Iron, it cannot help you to build Hemoglobin and Red Blood Cells- which is essentially what you need to “build blood”. Do you understand? So this is why doctors just laugh at the popular myth of “malt and milk give blood”
“And in fact, shall I shock you more? The Peak Milk bottle clearly says on it that it’s NOT rich in Iron. Look at the attached image- It is boldly written on it. So IF you are hoping to “build blood”, and you are drinking Peak Milk- you are actually wasting your time. And money.”

IF anything at all, all those Milk is high in “saturated fats”- which as I said earlier on is “bad fat” for your heart. Regularly taking in large amounts would make you fat, increase bad cholesterol “LDL”, can give you hypertension, heart disease and a heart attack. Be careful.

I’m NOT saying don’t take it at all. I’m only saying as an adult, it has risks for your heart and on your health IF you take large amounts of all those milk on a consistent continuous pattern. Because of the high calories and fat.

You have to learn how to limit it and cut down.
Okay let’s analyse the Maltina. What does it contain? Look at the attached images. Again you see that Maltina – like any malt drink- is mainly calories and carbohydrates (sugar) with very little fat and vitamins. That’s all. There is NO Iron whatsoever in Maltina. NONE AT ALL.

So you now see my argument as a medical doctor on this myth of “Maltina and Peak milk gives blood”. Maltina has NO Iron. Peak Milk has NO Iron. Iron is what your body needs to build blood. Do you now see that it makes no medical sense to continue to believe this deceitful myth?

Unfortunately, some Nollywood movies and many uninformed elderly people have pushed this narrative for so long that no one ever bothered to check or ask questions. But actually, it is NOT true. Milk and Malt will NOT give you Blood. If you feel you need blood, see your doctor.

I hope this short thread has NOT broken your heart. It wasn’t deliberate. I felt I should set things straight and tell you all the truth. If you want to drink Maltina or milk, go ahead. But not for blood

“But what about Ugwu and Milk”? Now this is NOT a myth. *It is TRUE. It works* . Not because of the Milk but because of the Ugwu. And it is the same principle- Ugwu is known as Pumpkin. Pumpkin is actually rich in Iron. And of course Iron helps to build blood as I said earlier.

Ugwu is known to contain high levels of Iron actually. So definitely Ugwu can help you build your blood. Look at the attached images to verify this information. Infact, the Igbos have used Ugwu as natural blood tonic for centuries. And they are right on that. That’s NO myth.
He posted a link showing the content of Iron in Ugwu leaves also.

“But they give us Malt and Milk after donating blood” Actually, that’s a “ *thanks for coming* ”, dears. They are not giving you back your blood AT ALL. Don’t be deceived. It’s just an incentive for you to donate. It’s NOT blood replacement. I hope this is clear enough for us all.

My Wife Demands ‘bribe’ Before Sex, Says Pastor - Family by Halicutie(f) : 7:29 pm On Jun 27, 2019

A 48-year-old pastor, Abayomi Adegboyega, is seeking dissolution of his 16-year-old marriage, alleging that his wife always demands `bribe’ from him before sex.

Adegboye told an Igando Customary Court in Lagos State on Wednesday to end the marriage on grounds that his wife, Risikat, denied him sex.

“My wife starves me of sex, she will never allow me to sleep with her unless I give her money or buy her a gift,” he said.

He said that he would kill himself if the court would not dissolve the union which produced four children.

“Risikat should never come near me, I do not want to have anything to do with her again.

“She is irritating me, I will kill myself if the loveless marriage is not dissolved,” he told the court.

The petitioner also alleged that his wife cooked his food late and tarnished his image in public.

“My wife wants my ministry to collapse, she defames my character before my members and others; people who want to help me refuse because of what they hear from her,”he said.

He added that Risikat fought his church members.

However, 39-year-old Risikat, denied all the allegations and accused her husband of threatening her life with charms.

“My husband told me that he would use charm to destroy my life; indeed, after few weeks, I was very sick; everywhere my family took me to, they said it was a spiritual attack, the trader alleged.

The mother of four claimed that she never denied Abayomi s*x not cooked his food late.

She also denied fighting her husband or members of his church.

Nigeria Vs Guinea: 5 Things We Learnt As Super Eagles Qualify For Round Of 16 by Halicutie(f) : 7:40 pm On Jun 27, 2019

Nigeria has become the first team at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, to book a spot in the last 16.

The Super Eagles defeated their biggest rival in Group B Guinea by a lone goal on Wednesday, to confirm their place in the next round.

So, what are the five things we learnt from the fixture at Alexandria?

1. Easy draw in the next round: With Gernot Rohr’s all but certain to finish top of Group B, they will likely get a third-placed team in the Round of 16. Although there are no small countries anymore in (African) football, it would be better to face the heavyweights much later in the competition.

2. Omeruo, Man of the Match: The defender, who spent last season on loan at Leganes from Chelsea, was in sparkling form against Guinea. Solid at the back, Omeruo proved decision at the other end of the pitch, rising highest to head in the winner. A lot of fans and pundits were surprised he kept his place ahead of Troost-Ekong, to partner the returning Leon Balogun. But on the strength of today’s performance, he justified his selection.

3. The Iwobi conundrum: Following the victory over Burundi, there were widespread calls for Rohr to drop skipper John Obi Mikel and start Alex Iwobi as a no. 10. The German listened and made the change. But the Arsenal man was a huge let down overall. He was jittery and clumsy all through the first half and only improved a bit after the break. The search for his uncle Jay Jay Okocha’s replacement is still on.

4. Akpeyi much better: Although it took the Kaizer Chiefs’ stopper just two minutes to flap at his first ball, he produced a much more assured performance. Credit has to be given to the Omeruo-Balogun axis in front of him, that served as a wall of resistance.

5. Kick Keita Out: Paul Put started the Liverpool midfielder against the Super Eagles, hoping that he would pull the strings against the three-time champions. Instead, Keita was given a kick around by Wilfred Ndidi and Oghenekaro Etebo and hardly stayed on his feet to influence the game. Jurgen Klopp must have been grinding his teeth, as his man kept falling and rolling around in agony. He was eventually substituted off.

MURIC Blasts Governor Wike For Declaring Rivers Christian State - Politics by Halicutie(f) : 8:03 pm On Jun 27, 2019

CHRISTIAN STATE: CALL WIKE TO ORDER NOW

PRESS RELEASE:
CHRISTIAN STATE: CALL WIKE TO ORDER NOW

The governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, declared two days ago that the state is a Christian State. The governor made the statement during a crusade organized by the Lord’s Chosen Charismatic Church in Port Harcourt, capital of Rivers State.

However, an Islamic human rights organization, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has called on stakeholders in the Nigerian project to call Wike to order. In a press statement distributed on Thursday, 27th June, 2019, MURIC described the governor’s statement as audacious, unguarded and reckless. The statement was signed by the Director of the organization, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

“At a time when Nigeria is facing religious and ethnic crises, a state governor still has the temerity to declare his state a Christian state. Wike is short in intellect, long in impunity. It is not his first time of making this pronouncement. We ignored him the first time because we did not want to dignify him with a response. But he has just exposed himself as an analogue governor with a triangular approach to all problems: religion, violence and impunity. Wike cannot think outside this triangular box.

“At a time when religious fanaticism is on the rise and the authorities are cautioning Nigerians to be moderate, a state governor is running loose with reckless statements like, ‘I repeat once again without apologies, Rivers is a Christian state. That is why nobody can touch us’.

“This is nothing but articulated demagoguery. It is audacious, preposterous and myopic. It is also a dangerous precedent. Nonetheless, Wike’s statement must also be seen as meaningless unless he can establish Canon law for his ‘Christian State’. That is the challenge we like to throw at Governor Wike. He should promulgate canon law without any hesitation, otherwise all his boasts amount to nothing. They are empty.

“Is Rivers the only state with Christian majority? Wike should learn from the moderate stance of the governors of Cross Rivers, Delta, Enugu, Anambra, Ebonyi, etc on the issue of religion. Wike is perpetuating a culture of acrobatic religiousity. He is playing on the intelligence of the good people of Rivers State and lending credence to Karl Marx’s view of religion as opium of the people. He is brandishing state-sponsored religiousity to cover his gross ineptitude.

“The spate of crime in Rivers State is an indictment on Wike. Cult-killing is on the rise. Kidnapping has become an obsession. Youth restiveness is everywhere in the state. But all these are by-products of mass unemployment. This is what Wike should face.

“He should be thinking of empowering the youth. Where are the roads built by Wike? What is the state of Rivers’ schools? Are there drugs in the hospitals? What are the rates of infant and maternal mortality in Rivers State? Port Harcourt is one of the most expensive places to live in Nigeria. How can Wike bring relief to the residents? It is high time Wike focused on governance and stopped propagating motor-park doctrine, manifesting ‘agbero’ faculty and exhibiting ‘bolekaja’ mentality.

“Nonetheless, Wike’s statement must also be seen as meaningless unless he can establish Canon law for his ‘Christian State’. That is the challenge we like to throw at Governor Wike. He should promulgate canon law without any hesitation, otherwise all his boasts amount to nothing. They are empty. Wike’s Christian state is a red herring

“Where is Wike’s constitutional backing? Section 10 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria clearly prohibits state religion. It says, 'The Government of the Federation or of a State shall not adopt any religion as a State Religion.' Wike’s declaration is therefore ultra vires. It is null, void and of no consequence whatsoever.

“It is illegal, unlawful and unconstitutional for any governor to declare his state a Christian or an Islamic state. For the avoidance of doubt, a clear difference must be seen between Wike’s declaration and the introduction of Shariah in parts of the North. The state legislatures of states where Shariah was introduced followed due process. The governors did not just wake up one day and make arbitrary declarations.

“In any case, there is also a world of difference between declaring a state an Islamic state and merely introducing Shariah to be used by the Muslim population. That is why several parts of the United Kingdom, the United States and some Western countries have introduced Shariah for their minority Muslim populations without necessarily declaring those countries Islamic nations.

“But where are the secularists? Where are those who claim that Nigeria is a secular state? Why is it that only Muslims are taken up when they make declarations bordering on religious particularism? Why are they silent now? Is this not selective judgement? Must we always behave a la Animal Farm? Our self-righteous public commentators and human rights lawyers would have brought heaven down if any Muslim governor made a similar statement. Why are we like this? Who placed a curse on Nigeria? Well known critics who fail to speak on Wike’s recent pronouncement should bury their heads in shame.

“Before we take a break, we remind Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State that specialisation necessitates division of labour. He should, therefore, concentrate on governance which is the job for which he was elected and leave evangelization and fire-brand crusade to Christian clerics. Wike should improve the security situation in order to attract investors and tourists. We appeal to stakeholders in the Nigerian project to call Wike to order.”

Okorocha And Wife Carted Away 67 Vehicles - Task Force Alleges by Halicutie(f) : 8:14 pm On Jun 27, 2019

Chairman of the Imo State Task Force on Recovery of Government Assets, Mr. Jasper Ndubuaku, has alleged that the immediate past governor of the state, Rochas Okorocha and members of his family carted away 67 vehicles belonging to the state. In addition, Ndubuaku said Okorocha’s ADC took away five vehicles while his driver went home with one Prado Jeep.

Speaking with newsmen, yesterday, the chairman lamented that other goods allegedly carted away from government house, ministries and parastatals included generating sets, chairs, television sets, kitchen utensils, beddings and cutleries all valued at over N50 billion. Reacting in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media, Sam Onwuemeodo, former Governor Okorocha said the allegations were diversionary and attempts by the Emeka Ihedioha administration to cover its inadequacies and inability to deliver since he took over the reins of power.

He asked his successor to list those things he alleged were looted for him to reply formally. The statement said, “They have remained riotous in their approach on every issue. They have not begun to run a government because they came to power through the back door. They are only busy blackmailing the former governor. We have challenged them to publish whatever they are looking for so that we can respond as responsible people. All the key appointees of the staggering government are all saying different things on one issue. The government can’t fly,” he said.

Giving a breakdown of what was allegedly looted by the outgone administration, Ndubuaku said the 27 local government chairmen, all the 30 commissioners and special advisers went away with government property. He alleged that the former the governor went home with all functional vehicles in the government house including bullet proof cars, back-up cars and outriders’ motorcycles, while his wife went home with one bullet proof vehicle. Ndubuaku said all the 27 payloaders for construction and 27 graders bought by the Ikedi Ohakim administration were carted away.

The chairman expressed shock that one of Okorocha’s sisters got contract to equip offices at N5 million each, but that all the offices had been stripped bare. Ndubuaku said, “The looting spree was unprecedented. It was as if government never existed as all paraphernalia of government were carted away. Even the 150 transformers bought by Okorocha for electioneering stunt all disappeared in thin air.

Some of them told us that the cars were accidented somewhere in Abuja and Jos and we have told them to take us there.” He said all the looted property and their custodians had been identified, stressing that the essence of the briefing was to warn them to bring the property back before members of the task force swooped on them. He said if the advice was not heeded, government would have no option but go to their houses and take anything in sight, including criminalising their action and prosecuting them accordingly.

2023 Presidency: Buhari Will Never Give Tinubu What He Wants - Ayo Adebanjo by Halicutie(f) : 8:21 pm On Jun 27, 2019

Chief Ayo Adebanjo, elder statesman and Afenifere chieftain, on Wednesday said Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and some Yoruba leaders are only deceiving President Muhammadu Buhari that they are in support of his government with the hope that the presidency will support the zoning of the 2023 presidential ticket to the South-West.

Speaking with Daily Independent, Adebanjo while reacting to the visit of Tinubu and some Yoruba leaders to President Buhari on Tuesday described them as impostors who embarked on the visit for their selfish interests and not because of the welfare of the Yoruba nation.

According to him, instead of Tinubu and his associates to talk to the president on the issue of insecurity in the region, especially the invasion of farmlands by Fulani herdsmen, they only went there to discuss the issue of true federalism which the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has not shown any commitment to since coming to power in 2015.

“How many times will we continue to tell you these people are not Afenifere? They are just fake. Nigerians know who the true Afenifere is. They are just leaders of APC in South-West. When last did they come out as Afenifere except when they want to go and deceive Buhari? They never said anything about killings by Fulani herdsmen, instead they are talking about true federalism.

“Is Buhari sincere about restructuring? Is that not the basis on which Tinubu was elected as governor? They are just deceiving themselves. I don’t want to waste my time on them again because they are just jokers. You don’t have to lay claim to Afenifere. Nigerians know the real Afenifere.

“They were with us before they chickened out. Now that you have left, why are you still laying claim to that name? A cause we have been fighting before, you abandoned it because you want to be president. They are fighting the cause of the Yoruba for their own interest. It is clear that they don’t have the interest of the Yoruba at heart”.

Adebanjo who said Tinubu and his colleagues are just deceiving President Buhari in order to get what they want in 2023 also said President Buhari is also playing along with them having realised that they are not sincere in their dealing with him.

He said Buhari will never give Tinubu and his friends what they wanted, which is the presidency in 2023.

“They only go to Buhari whenever they want to deceive him. They have been deceiving Buhari and Buhari too is also deceiving them. What he wanted from Buhari, Buhari won’t give him. Buhari too is deceiving them because he knows they are fake.

“Their visit is an attempt to persuade Buhari that they are for him so that he can give them the slot for presidency in 2023. But Buhari is not going to give them. He only needs them for support during elections.

“Tinubu knows that. They have used him before. Didn’t they use him before the election in 2015 only to abandon him later? It was when the 2019 election was approaching that they remembered him again”, he said.

Imo Discovers Fresh N20bn Judgment Debts Incurred By Okorocha’s Administration by Halicutie(f) : 8:25 pm On Jun 27, 2019

The Imo State Government on Wednesday said it inherited judgment debts of over N20 billion incurred by the administration of ex-governor Rochas Okorocha.

It said the debts, which had almost collapsed the government, arose from subsisting court judgments, Orders, Garnishee Orders and Proceedings for Execution of judgments and orders of courts against the state.

Imo State Attorney-General, Ndukwe Nnawuchi, SAN, made the claims in a statement to The Nation yesterday.

Nnawuchi said: “The present administration is as a result inundated and consistently harassed, embarrassed and put under pressure by the judgment creditors whose drive to execute the aforesaid judgments, orders and garnishee proceedings has brought the smooth running of government to a near halt, leading to an imminent collapse of government.”

He accused Okorocha of “deliberately” foisting the “unenviable situation” on his successor, Governor Emeka Ihedioha.

Nnawuchi re-affirmed Ihedioha’s government commitment to the Rule of Law.

He added: “Accordingly, and in pursuance of that commitment, all judgment creditors and beneficiaries of garnishee orders (whether nisi or absolute) are kindly requested to report at the chambers of the Honourable Attorney General, Imo State Secretariat, new Owerri, at 8.00am on Monday, 1st July, 2019 with Certified True Copies of such Judgments and Orders for the purpose of initiating the process of resolving and ultimately satisfying the said Judgments and Orders of court conveniently, amicably and without acrimony.

“This will guarantee avoidable hardship to both judgment creditors and government. The understanding and cooperation of all concerned are hereby solicited, so that together we can rebuild Imo State.”

NYSC POP: Don't Lose Faith - NYSC - by Halicutie(f) : 9:11 pm On Jun 27, 2019

It is a general belief that life begins for young adults immediately after graduating from the university. But for some, there's a mercy extension till after NYSC. All according to the proverbial hand, and how 'him power take reach'.

Whichever the case, for another batch of gallant men and woman who availed themselves for service to the fatherland, today is the first day of the rest of their lives, and I don't mean it metaphorically.

The pellicles should be falling already; for the late bloomers it's usually around the time you receive your discharge certificate. Reality further sets in as you propel yourself, seeking purpose, asking what comes next. Fingers twitch relentlessly, eager to force-dial those uncles and aunties into finally making a move. The odds are they'll take your action as an excuse to explain away their ineptitude.

Not that they don't wish you well (shockingly, they might not). It's just what is.

What then do you do to not become a victim of post-NYSC depression?

Here are a few tips:

1) Hang around people or places that give you joy

2) Do things that give you joy. If you're lucky enough, you could start making a living off them.

3) Never let anybody dictate to you how your life should go or be at any point in time. If your choices bounce back, fine, at least you know you lived life on your own terms.

4) Be your own source of joy.

I hope this meets someone well.

Always remember, your best is yet to come.

Happy POP, guys!

Bumi Thomas, Nigerian, Faces Deportation In UK. Given 14 Days To Leave by Halicutie(f) : 9:22 pm On Jun 27, 2019

Musician born in UK given 14 days to leave the country

Bumi Thomas has been told she is illegal despite being born in Glasgow and spending most of her life in the UK

A musician born in the UK faces being kicked out of her home because of a little-known change to Home Office legislation.

Bumi Thomas was given 14 days to leave after being told she is illegal despite living here most of her life. The rising jazz star grew up thinking she was British, attended university in the UK and has legally worked and paid taxes since graduation.

However because her parents are Nigerian, she now faces deportation and being separated from her family and friends. The situation bears a chilling resemblance to the Windrush scandal, which saw many people deported in error after decades of life in the UK.

Ms Thomas was born in Glasgow in June 1983 to parents who came over from Africa in the early 1970s. In January 1983, Margaret Thatcher’s Tory government changed the British Nationality Act that removed the automatic right of citizenship for children of parents from former colonies.

The singer’s parents should have registered her but were unaware they needed to do so. In a twist of irony, Ms Thomas’ elder sister Kemi was born one year before the Act and has always had legal status.

The musician, 36, believes she is a victim of an increasingly hostile attitude by the Home Office to migrants in the UK. She told the Mail on Sunday: ‘My parents came here at the end of the Windrush era. ‘I had a National Insurance number, I had my birth certificate, I’d got a driving licence, a bank account, I went to college.

‘At no point during that process was there any indication I was doing anything incorrectly.’ Speaking to Metro.co.uk, she continued: ‘I have never had any question in my mind that I’m British and Scottish. ‘And that’s something I’m proud of. But according to a piece of paper, suddenly what I think about myself isn’t valid. It’s an illusion.’

At the age of three-and-a-half, Ms Thomas and her family returned to Nigeria. She came back to the UK as a teenager, thinking she automatically had dual British-Nigerian nationality.

After graduating with a degree in fine arts from Bath Spa University she began to work and moved to London, where she now lives with her sister.

It was only at the age of 25 when she went to apply for her UK passport that she was told she was never registered as British. The Home Office was told she had technically overstayed in an illegal capacity.

Ms Thomas said her case was classed as ‘complex’ and she was told to use human rights legislation rather than immigration laws to fight it. That marked the start of an ‘exhausting and expensive’ decade-long legal battle.

Two weeks ago she received a letter from the Home Office saying her application for permanent residency had been unsuccessful. She was given 14 days to appeal or face detention without notice.

Ms Thomas has since lodged an appeal and is awaiting a court hearing. The musician, who has performed at the Royal Festival Hall and London Palladium, continued: ‘My parents had no idea of the law change.

‘This was in an analogue age, where correspondence was written and there was no social media.’ She added: ‘When I was told I wasn’t British, I was shocked and devastated.

My soul and my spirit were screaming. ‘Nigeria is foreign to me and I am a foreigner there. I’ve been in the UK for 18 years.’ Ms Thomas’ grandfather came to the UK to study medicine and she said her parents were also given a warm welcome as part of the Windrush generation – when people from former colonies came to the UK to rebuild the country after the Second World War.

She said their treatment was in stark contrast to the way the Home Office was now treating her and thousands of others who ‘fall through the cracks of the system.’ She added: ‘There is a stigma attached to being an immigrant these days.

‘At no point did I ever think I was doing anything wrong. ‘When my parents came over they were welcomed but now it is different. There are people who have lived in the UK for 30/40/50 years facing hostility.’

Ms Thomas continued: ‘The Home Office right now has a hostile environment policy, a set of administrative and legislative measures that are designed to make staying in the UK as difficult as possible for people like me.’

The musician should be making her US debut at the Ford Theatre in Los Angeles in October but the immigration issues mean that is now in doubt. She has launched a gofundme page to help towards legal costs, which are already at £7,000 and rising.

Ms Thomas’s lawyer, Fahad Ahmed, said she missed out on automatic citizenship by a matter of months and added: ‘Courts take a less harsh view than the Home Office, and if someone can prove their life is here, the courts will use their discretion.’

The British Nationality Act 1948 gave citizens of British colonies the right to settle in the UK. Since they had the legal right to come to the UK, they never needed nor were given any documents upon entry. In what later became known as the Windrush scandal, many were wrongly detained, denied legal rights or deported in administrative blunders.

The Home Office is set to pay up to £200 million in compensation to people whose lives were damaged by their mistaken classification as illegal immigrants. The Home Office has been contacted by Metro.co.uk about Ms Thomas’ case.

Graduates Who Skip NYSC Can Contest Governorship Elections" - Court Declares by Halicutie(f) : 9:26 pm On Jun 27, 2019

A Federal High Court in Abuja says a candidate cannot be disqualified from an election for failure to participate in the National Youth Service Corps scheme.

The court made this pronouncement on Wednesday when it struck out a suit brought against the Governor of Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun, by a former senator, Iyabo Anisulowo.

The pre-election suit challenged the eligibility of Mr Abiodun over his failure to participate in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme.

The NYSC was established in 1973 and participation is mandatory for all Nigerians who graduate from a tertiary institution in or outside the country before they attain the age of 30.

The presentation of the NYSC discharge certificate awarded at the end of the one-year scheme is a requirement for employment into the formal sector in Nigeria.

Last year, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) disqualified the then Minister of Communications, Adebayo Shittu, from running in its governorship primaries in Oyo State after PREMIUM TIMES exposed him for skipping the NYSC scheme after taking a degree in Law in the late 1970s.

Despite the revelation that he dodged the NYSC, President Muhammadu Buhari allowed Mr Shittu to remain as minister until the dissolution of the federal executive council last month.

The former minister challenged his disqualification from the APC primaries but the court dismissed his suit against the party.

Mr Shittu also accused the APC of double standards for allowing some aspirants such as Mr Abiodun to run for its tickets even though they had also been accused of skipping the NYSC scheme despite being graduates.

The former minister has also sued the NYSC, arguing that participation in the NYSC is not a requirement to hold public office.

Also last year, Kemi Adeosun was forced to step down as Minister of Finance after PREMIUM TIMES revealed that she forged an NYSC exemption certificate which enabled her to be cleared for an appointment first as a commissioner in Ogun State and then as a minister in 2015 by President Buhari.

Mrs Adeosun had graduated from an institution in the United Kingdom before the age of 30, which made her eligible for participation in the NYSC scheme.

An exemption certificate is awarded only to Nigerians who are older than 25 years when they graduated, those serving in the military or security forces or those exempted on health ground.

Mrs Adeosun’s case is, however, different from that of Messrs Shittu and Abiodun because they did not use forged NYSC certificate neither did they falsely claim to have participated or be exempted from it.

The Abiodun judgement

In the suit against Mr Abiodun of Ogun State, his counsel, Wale Ajayi, had prayed the court to dismiss the case against his client, saying participation in the NYSC scheme is not a requirement for participation in elections.

Justice M A Mohammed, in his judgment, dismissed Mr Abiiodun’s notice of preliminary objection and proceeded to deliver judgment on the substantive suit.

The judge also noted that the plaintiff failed to establish that Mr Abiodun presented false academic claims to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

He held that the NYSC Act does not stipulate that a candidate who failed to participate in the NYSC scheme be disqualified from elections.

The judge pointed out that a candidate can only be disqualified based on Section 177 of the Constitution, and subsequently dismissed the suit.

The section states: “A person shall be qualified for election to the office of Governor of a State if: (a) he is a citizen of Nigeria by birth; (b) he has attained the age of thirty-five years; (c) he is a member of a political party and is sponsored by that political party, and (d) he has been educated up to at least School Certificate level or its equivalent.”

The court said since Mr Abiodun has not breached any of these provisions, the suit lacked merit.

The implication of the judgment is that candidates seeking election to contest governorship elections in Nigeria no longer need to present NYSC certificates.

The case is the last of a series of pre-election matters filed in court against the Ogun governor. The other cases had been similarly dismissed.

Only on Monday, the Supreme Court dismissed a similar case brought by Abdulrafiu Baruwa challenging the qualification of Mr Abiodun on the ground of failure to disclose all his academic qualifications.

I also notice that far more men kill themselves in most countries but in Naija it is about even. Wonder why.
