Our weapons against insecurity — Service chiefs by Chidera74(m) : 7:01 pm On Jul 18, 2023

The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher
Musa, said yesterday he will promote creativity
within the nation’s Armed Forces.
He also said the Armed Forces will make Nigerians
the focus of activities to truly put them at the centre
of its actions towards promoting and safeguarding
a secure environment for all.
The CDS equally said his leadership concept would
be built on three pillars — being people-centric,
prioritising troops’ welfare and deepening jointness
and inter-agency collaboration.
He said the armed forces would defend the
country’s territorial integrity and democracy as well
as safeguard internal security and unity to achieve
the stability required to guarantee sustainable
national development.
The CDS stated these when he appeared for
screening before the House of Representatives ad
hoc committee on screening of service chiefs. It
will be recalled that the Senate had last week,
screened the service chiefs and other security heads
appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu last
month.
He said: “I recognize the significance of leading the
thousands of devoted and distinguished service
men and women to provide a secure and peaceful
environment for Nigerian people to freely engage in
their legitimate enterprise, in line with the
constitutional mandate of the Armed Forces of
Nigeria, AFN.
“In this regard, the AFN under my leadership will be
people-centric by prioritizing and safeguarding our
people and their legitimate way of life as
prescribed by the Nigerian constitution.’’
On welfare of troops, Musa said troops’ welfare and
sound administration will provide the required
atmosphere for the AFN to deliver on its
constitutional responsibilities.
He said the Armed Forces will continue to seek
ways and means to improve the welfare of its
personnel under his watch.
“In this regard, service men and women of the AFN
should be reassured of my commitment to their
welfare, provision of relevant operational equipment
as well as infrastructural development within
available resources to enable them succeed in
assigned constitutional roles.
“I shall also promote international military
cooperation/collaboration to further expose and
provide capacity building to AFN personnel in joint
and combined operations outside the shores of
Nigeria.
“This measure is required to consolidate on AFN
welfare priorities in order to effectively deploy, fight
and win our nation’s wars by providing ready,
prompt and sustained land, sea and air dominance
by the AFN across traditional as well as
asymmetric conflict settings as part of a joint
force,” he said.
Speaking also at the screening, the Chief of Army
Staff, Major Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, said the Nigeria
Army remains the most misunderstood, complex
and challenged component of the Nigeria Armed
Forces.
According to him, security challenges in the last
two decades have made governance more
challenging, and that it has disrupted developmental
progress in the country.
Lagbaja said: “I consider my nomination as a call
to higher responsibilities and I am determined not
to betray the trust and confidence reposed in me.
‘’It is an open secret that our country has faced a
challenging security environment in the past two
decades. It has impacted adversely on our socio-
economic and political lives.
“The episodic crises of the past have now become
enduring, thereby making governance and the rule of
law more challenging for successive
administrations.
“Today’s painful reality is that insecurity has
distressed our developmental plans and aspirations
for a strong, prosperous, globally competitive and
influential nation.
‘’Never in recent time is the requirement for
proactive, adaptive and inclusive leadership more
needed than Nigeria’s security environment of
today.
“These requirements are what I intend to do as
COAS if confirmed. I am mindful that the Nigerian
Army, which I am being screened to lead is a
crucial component of our military instrument of
national power. “It is not only the largest, but the
most complex, most geographically spread, most
sought after during crisis and often most
misunderstood.
“I believe that for the Nigerian Army to grapple with
the demands of the contemporary security
environment, it would consistently transform to be a
step ahead of its time.
“For this reason, I conceptualize my philosophy of
command as to transform the Nigerian Army into a
well-trained, equipped and highly motivated force
towards achieving our constitutional responsibilities
within a joint environment.
‘’I intend to partner with the National Assembly and
other stakeholders in achieving this command
philosophy.’’
Speaking earlier at the meeting, the chairman of the
committee, Babajimi Benson, said for more than
sixteen years, Nigeria had witnessed diverse and
unprecedented level of insecurity in which the
Armed Forces of Nigeria had been fully involved,
prompting the launch of several theatres of
operations and exercises as well as providing
support for tackling several domestic security
challenges.
“The House of Representatives is delighted with the
successes recorded so far, especially in the last
one year. We acknowledge these robust
achievements which is a proof of the level of
professionalism often displayed by our military in
the discharge of their duties.
“We urge you to effectively collaborate with sister
security agencies to ensure that all security threats
are completely neutralised, and Nigerians can live
peacefully. “The world of security is dynamic and
ever-changing. New security threats are emerging
across the globe. Today, wars are not only fought
on the land, sea and air, but also in cyberspace.
“Consequently, the art of warfare must, therefore, be
a step ahead. This is why Nigeria must tap into and
harness the potential of having a Defence Space
Force, like in the United States of America.
‘’While acknowledging the immense contributions of
the Defence Space Administration, DSA, there is a
need for a full-fledged Defence Space Force to
adequately handle potential threats from cyberspace
and provide intelligence support to other services,’’
the lawmaker said.
Tasking the nominees on their responsibilities,
Benson stated that the role of securing lives and
property of Nigerians is a collective task for the
Armed Forces.
He stated further that the 10th House of
Representatives is keenly committed to providing
the necessary legislative framework to the current
government in its quest to ensure that Nigerians
lived in peace.
“We must, therefore, work collectively to deliver
more on the goals of this administration to
drastically reduce cases of insecurity across the
country.
“While the House will continue to support this
vision through our legislative activities, we shall also
embark on rigorous oversight exercises, beginning
from this screening, to ensure that the Armed
Forces of Nigeria adhere strictly to the provisions of
all Appropriation Acts as will be eventually passed
by the National Assembly and accented to by Mr.
President.
He, therefore, urged the nominees to cooperate with
the National Assembly while performing their
constitutional duties of ensuring a peaceful, secure
and prosperous country for all Nigerians.
The meeting afterwards went into a closed-door
session.

Mbappe set for face-to-face talks with PSG chief by Chidera74(m) : 7:35 pm On Jul 18, 2023

Kylian Mbappe told PSG in June that he has
no intention of signing a contract extension;
the French forward's current deal expires in
2024 and PSG say he must extend or be sold
this summer; PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi
will call for unity at the club in a speech on
Tuesday
Mbappe sent a letter to PSG in June stating he had
no intention of extending his contract, which expires
in 2024, meaning he could leave for free next
summer - a situation club president Al-Khelaifi is
desperate to avoid.
The France striker later clarified he had not asked
the club to allow him to move to Spanish giants
Real Madrid, who have tried and failed to land him
in the past.
He has been given a deadline of July 31 to commit
to staying at PSG until at least the summer of 2025,
otherwise he will be sold to the highest bidder next
month.
Al-Khelaifi will give a speech to the full squad at
their new £250m training ground tomorrow, where
he will stress the importance of PSG as an
institution and the squad giving their full support to
new head coach Luis Enrique.
Mbappe returned to PSG training on Monday for the
first time since he told the club he was leaving
when his contract runs out next summer. He had
standard medical checks and will resume full
training on Tuesday.
PSG squad members who played for their countries
in June did not have to return until Monday.

Cristiano Ronaldo insists the 'Saudi league is better than MLS' after Lionel Mes by Chidera74(m) : 7:45 pm On Jul 18, 2023

Cristiano Ronaldo has claimed that the 'Saudi Pro
League is better than the MLS' just a day after
Lionel Messi was unveiled by US side Inter Miami.
The Argentine was presented with his new club
shirt on Sunday during the unveiling ceremony,
after it was announced earlier this summer that he
would be joining the Florida-based team in a
£45million-per-year deal .
Ronaldo, meanwhile, was one of the first big
names to move to Saudi Arabia, joining Al-Nassr
following his exit from Manchester United last
season in a whopping £175million-per-year deal.
Many other players have now followed him out to
the Middle Eastern country, including names such
as Karim Benzema, N'Golo Kante and even Steven
Gerrard.
While Ronaldo recently confirmed that he would be
staying in Saudi Arabia next season, the five-time
Ballon d'Or winner had also been linked with a
return back to Europe and to his former side Real
Madrid.
But following a 5-0 pre-season friendly hammering
by Celta Vigo on Monday, Ronaldo has issued a
frank and honest assessment of his future,
claiming he will not be moving to the US or back
to Europe, while also taking credit for the influx of
players heading to the Middle East.
'The Saudi league is better than the MLS,' he said,
according to Fabrizio Romano .
'I'm 100 per cent sure I won't return to any
European club. I opened the way to the Saudi
league and now all the players are coming here.
'I won't return to European football, the door is
completely closed,' he added.
'I'm 38-years-old, also European football has lost
lot of quality. The only league that for me has a lot
of quality and is at a higher level than all the
others is the Premier League.
'The Spanish league does not have that great
quality. The Portuguese league is a good league,
but it is not a top, top league. The German league
I think has also lost a lot. I'm sure I won't play in
Europe again. I want to play in Saudi Arabia.'
His team Al-Nassr were narrowly beaten to the
Saudi Pro League title last season by league rivals
Al-Ittihad, but were banned from signing new
players by FIFA last week, after they had failed to
pay £390,000 in add-ons for former Leicester
player Ahmed Musa.
Despite that, the club signed Marcelo Brozovic
before the ban was implemented at the start of
July and have also been heavily linked with a move
for Hakim Ziyech.
'In one year, more and more top players will come
to Saudi,' the Portuguese superstar continued. 'In a
year the Saudi league will overtake the Turkish
league and Dutch league.
'Players who arrived aren't like what the president
of the European Union said. Jota and Neves are
young players.'
Son Heung-min revealed this week that he had
rejected an offer to join a Saudi Pro League side .
While Man City also turned down an £18m bid
from Al-Ahli's for Riyad Mahrez on Monday.
When asked whether he would move to the MLS,
Ronaldo added: 'I think the Saudi league is much
better than the United States. My team is Al-
Nassr.'
'100 per cent. It's a fact,' Ronaldo said. 'It was
going to take a year, but it was six months. I was
wrong for six months.
'But I knew this was going to happen because in
the Italian league, when I went there, it was also
dead and then rejuvenated.
'Where Cristiano goes, it generates greater interest
and I knew it was going to be like that. I'm sure
that next season more stars will go there [to Saudi
Arabia].'

Andre Onana will be a pass master for Manchester United: After David De Gea fail by Chidera74(m) : 7:51 pm On Jul 18, 2023

Manchester United 's handling of David de Gea's
departure after 12 years at Old Trafford can
certainly be questioned.
The decision they ultimately reached to replace
him, though, should be less of a debating point.
Especially if Andre Onana goes on to succeed De
Gea in the way he is expected to.
'It could be a huge signing in terms of style and
where Manchester United can go,' said Dr John
Harrison, an increasingly prominent authority in the
world of goalkeeper analysis.
'Andre Onana is exactly the profile of goalkeeper
they needed to go for.
'It's potentially the sort of move that they need to
make to go from top four and winning cups to
challenging for a title and getting far in the
Champions League.
'De Gea was a very solid keeper if you want to be
around the top four but over the course of the
season, you will face more shots with him than
you would if you had someone in goal who was
better at preventing shots happening in the first
place.
'And if you can't use the goalkeeper in the build up
as much it limits what your team can do. Onana,
Manchester United fans will hope, is a ceiling
raiser so you can move that level up.'
Harrison is head of data science at Goalkeeper xG
( Goalkeeper.com ) who have devised a model
which allows them to quantify everything stoppers
do and better explain the impact of their actions.
Their expertise informs football authorities and
clubs operating at the highest level of the game
across the world.
Through their research Goalkeeper xG explores the
position in even greater depth and, among other
things, can conclude whether right decisions are
being made by goalkeepers or certain shots should
be saved.
They are also able to identify the ideal type of
goalkeeper that different clubs need based on the
type of situations they commonly face.
In United's case, 68 per cent of De Gea's workload
last season was shot stopping, 28 per cent was
shot prevention and just four per cent was
distribution.
Meanwhile, in those categories, Goalkeeper xG's
findings had De Gea as the Premier League's fifth
best shot stopper out of 39, 36th when it came to
shot preventing actions and 20th in terms of
distribution.
'He was not the worst goalkeeper in the league,'
Harrison said. 'He was 10th overall, so in the top
quarter. But for Manchester United and for a guy
on £375,000-per-week they don't want a guy in the
top quarter … they need one in the top two or
three.
'In terms of replacing De Gea and not renewing his
contract I think it was sensible from United.
'When he was in his prime and the No 1 shot-
stopper, that outweighed the fact that he was an
average distributor and poor preventer.'
That is no longer the case now though.
A big and connected issue for De Gea was the
change of style Erik ten Hag wanted to implement
which he often looked uncomfortable with.
United took a lot more short goal-kicks putting
increased pressure on whoever was between the
sticks.
It was also noticeable how Ten Hag's plans to play
a higher line were scaled back, they reduced how
often they passed the ball back to De Gea and also
played out from the back due to the Spaniard's
limitations.
Those plans will be back on the agenda again now
with Onana's style in stark contrast to De Gea's.
He came through Barcelona's famous La Masia
academy but arrived there already boasting some
of the qualities synonymous with their players – an
ease in possession, in his case, using either foot
to play short or long.
One of the big things he worked on at Barcelona
was how to read the game and pick out an
unmarked teammate when distributing, something
he displayed on the biggest stage of the
Champions League final against Manchester City.
Meanwhile, watching Manuel Neuer at the 2010
World Cup was also a game-changer for a young
Onana who was inspired by the German's sweeper-
keeper style.
Harrison said: 'If they do sign Onana, I expect the
distribution percentage will be way higher because
they'll pass back more, the shot prevention through
cross claiming and sweeping will increase and I
imagine he'll face more through b*lls than last
season. De Gea faced very few and that's linked to
the team playing deeper as sweeping was not one
of his strengths.
'Onana will help Manchester United recycle the ball
and keep possession but also he's got that eye for
a killer pass and that calmness to lure opposing
teams in and then unlock defences, making it
easier for the attacking players in his team.
'Teams do not want to be counter-attacked by Man
United and will try and sit and make a deep block.
'But if they're facing a goalkeeper who'll just keep
walking up the pitch with the ball, they've got to
pressure him at some point. If he's then calm
enough to play good passes and not just
automatically go long, it should be a recipe for
success.'
As impressive as he is with his feet, Harrison is
keen to stress that, such was De Gea's workload
Onana will not get away with not being good with
his hands too.
He may not be an equal to peak De Gea in that
sense and Harrison expects United's success in
that area to drop with Onana, which might spark
questions if the difference is too great.
But Harrison said: 'He might not save you the odd
game like De Gea would, but over the course of 38
games in a season he should face far fewer shots
than De Gea would because of his pro-activeness
and the fact that he'll allow Manchester United to
keep more of the ball.'
That view might irk the traditionalists but Harrison
explained: 'Being a good shot stopper is crucial
and the most important part of goalkeeping, but
not the be-all and end-all.
'Saving a shot is the last thing a keeper has to do
and potentially you could have done something
before. An elite shot preventer can be as good as
a great shot stopper.
'Onana will be a great addition to the Premier
League. It will be super exciting to see him.
'He's just going to keep pushing the boundaries of
goalkeeping further and further forwards.'
Doing so in the way the 27 year-old does means
mistakes might well come with the territory.
Onana's approach is high risk, high reward, with
some bold decisions made and positions taken
up.
He is well aware of the dangers but relishes the
pressure and has no fear, believing it is all worth it
if his actions result in his team ending up in
advantageous situations.
Ironically, the last time he felt fear on the pitch
was the 2017 Europa League final when his young
Ajax team froze against United's senior stars. After
that, he vowed, never again, which is good news
for United now he has joined them.
Harrison added: 'He might do an Alisson [when he
joined Liverpool], hit the ground running and be
completely fine.
'But I would also not judge him too harshly on a
few early mistakes if he makes them because he's
definitely one of those goalkeepers who's so
proactive that the good will outweigh the bad
eventually.
'For Manchester United and their fans it will be
exciting. He's one of those goalkeepers you'd pay
money to watch because you want to see what he
is doing.'
