FACTORS LEADING TO FAILURE IN SCHOOL by okunlola(m) : 9:03 am On Mar 24, 2022

Factors contributing to failure in school
Failure is a common thing amongst students. Many students see failure as a set-back in life. However, it should be seen as a challenge. Also while some will look inwards, others will shift blame on teachers and parents. Such excesses range from hatred of teachers, problems at home resulting from lack of concentration on school work, lack of school materials, ill health etc. but there are many factors don the parts of the students that may contribute to failure.
These are:

1. Lack of Ambition
Many students are without goals or ambition. They lack direction of where they are going. They cannot say specifically why they are going to school. They cannot identify what they want in life; hence they have no goal toward prosperity success. For students to succeed in life, he/she must have a goal which will serve as a drive and motivation to action. It will guide them, control their excesses as well as make them disciplined individual.
Therefore, a good student should set achievable goals, both short and long term because having no goal lead to frustration and failure.

2. Non- Challant Attitude towards Education
Students develop negative attitude towards education and cannot face the challenge of life. They therefore cannot visualize the importance of education.

3. Societal Influence
Students allow themselves to be deceived by those who have made money without going to school or attained high standard in education. A considerable number of these people are now investing a lot of money in education of their children to make up for their own shortcomings.

4. Extended Syllabus
As students proceed straight from secondary school to higher institution, many more topics are incorporated into school syllabus to enable students cope with the challenges of higher institutions. Teachers and students now find it difficult to complete the syllabus. However, it is the duty of good and ambitious students to have copy of the syllabus and consult it regularly for guidance.

5. Poor Study Habits
This is a major handicap to student’s progress. Many ambitious students set goals but are hampered by poor study habit. They cannot effectively manage their time. They end up disorganized. It is therefore advisable to cultivate the right study skills in order to avoid its consequences.

6. Exposure to Money
A lot of students have been exposed to affluence such that they now regard education as unimportant. They believe that life is a bed of roses and therefore could get what they want at any time without being educated.

7. Choice of subjects
Wrong choice of subjects leads to failure. Students should choose their subjects based on their ability, interest and aptitude. A misdirected chosen subject may lead to wrong choice of career. This may in turn lead to unhappiness and lack of job satisfaction in future.

8. Relationship With Teachers
Lack of cordial relationship between teachers and students is one of the major causes of failure. A disobedient and unruly student will not be free to seek academic assistance from his/her teachers. He/she will be forced to rely on his peers or keep to himself. When he runs into problem. Furthermore, many students suddenly develop hatred for their teachers when they are not performing well in their subject. Such students end up with hatred for the subjects and this eventually leads to failure. This can be avoided if students develop the right attitude toward their subject and their teachers.

9. Lack of confidence
Students who don’t plan adequately experience failure and tend to lose confidence in their ability to do well. Loss of confidence plays a negative role towards achieving success. Therefore, it is very important that students should build confidence which assist them in their studies. Students should approach test and examinations with vigor and confidence. Confidence breed determination which breeds hard work needed to succeed in school.
10. Use Of Drugs
Many students use stimulants like coffee, kolanuts and other drugs to enhance their performance and to keep them awake and active during studies. They resort to this due to improper planning, laziness and false hope of passing examination without consistently working hard. These drugs have been found to produce negative results.

11. Excessive Engagement In Activities That Are Not Educative
Playfulness is an enemy of progress. Students who do not value education engage in many activities which do not help them in their studies. They waste their precious time in gambling, attending disco parties, cinema house, watching movies, buying and selling, hawking etc. all these are done at the expense of their education.

AVOIDJNG DISTRACTIONS IN YOUR STUDIES by okunlola(m) : 4:21 pm On Mar 30, 2022

How to avoid distractions while studying
You know you really want to pass your exams with good grades. Your parents have put the pressure on you, or you promised yourself you would do better. But how do you focus on studying.
1. Tell whoever lives with you that you are studying for a really big test and they need to keep the noise down
2. Find a place in your house that is the quietest or where you're comfortable
3. Go into the room where you are studying and take out the things that distract you.
4. Once you are relaxed, organize everything you need to study and lay it out in order form hardest to easiest that way you do the harder ones fist so if you get tired you'll know already.
5. Don’t eat anything that will upset your stomach while studying.
6. Eliminate all noises you think you might have missed.
7. Clear your head of anything that you will think about that hasn't got anything to do with studying or else your brain won't store most of the things you need to know and you'll forget.
8. Tell all your friends that you're studying and realty need to and you appreciate it if they won't call, text, or come over and distract the time you are studying.
9. Put everything on silence. Your cell phone, pager, your laptop, all your electronic, on silent and keep them in your closet that way you won't get a text and want to answer it.
Avoiding procrastination
10. You may think that you have more than enough time to study and do your assignment. You may therefore leave some things undone, hoping to do them in future. This is procrastination and should be avoided.

LEARNING METHODS
The SQ3R method is the reading and studying system preferred by many educators. Research indicates that it is an extremely effective method for both comprehension and memory retention. It is a system of the reader actively involved.
Step 1: “S”= Survey before you actually read a chapter, or go over a particular section of notes, take five minutes to survey the material. Briefly check headings and subheadings in order to understand the author’s organizational pattern of ideas to be discussed. Scan all visual material. Read introductory and summary paragraphs. This preview will enable you to anticipate what the chapter is about.
Step 2: “Q”= Question creates interest in the material by asking: what are the main points of chapter? As you read, keep the question in mind and figure out the most important points. It gives you clearly defined purpose for reading, and helps you maintain the material.
Step 3: “R”= Read the chapter for meanings. Go through the paragraph before underling key words and phrases to help you recall the main points. Be selective, you don’t need to highlight non-important points or miss anything that can help your comprehension. Summarize main concepts in your own words in the margins. The more active you are in the reading process, the more you will retain.
Step 4: “R”= review the chapter so often to fix the material in your mind. Keep rereading your margin notes and underlings. Verbalize the sequence of main ideas and supporting facts to aid retention. Numerous reviews are a lot more effective than one cramming session the night before an exam. Review once right after you’ve finished reading and then every couple of days. The SQ3R is time consuming at first; except it to take ten to fifteen percent longer to read a given chapter. Research indicates a 70% increase in retention after two months of using the system and, eventually, a reduction in time spent preparing for exams.
You as a student is encouraged to find time to know your own learning style because it will help you to pass your examinations and make good grades.
