THE GOD OF RELIGION
Different
religions conceive God
differently, but what is
common to all of them
is that they conceive God anthropomorphically. What
does this concept
mean ? This simply mean
describing the nature of God
with human
attributes which is very wrong and questionable Those
who describe
God anthropomorphically, are
anthropomorphists. The
anthropomorsists
are those who conceive God as a huge human being, with
human
attributes. What a doctrine of
mis-conception ? The God of
religion,
whatever religion, is essentially an
anthropomorphic deity, that is,
a deity conceived in the image
and likeness of man, with all
human attributes. He has eyes, ears,
mouth, hands, feet, nose,
emotions,
etc, like human beings. He
sees, hears, speaks, does things with his hands, walks, sit down, etc. He
can be offended and become
any like
any human being. He can
become tired after working
hard and would need rest. Thus, for example, the
Yahweh of Israel after creating
the world
for six consecutive days was
tired and had to rest on the
seventh day. The God of religion is as emotional as human beings;
he can love, can
hate, can become jealous, can
be moved with anger when
offended and is often vindictive, but he can
also be moved with sympathy,
with mercy,
and can forgive. In-fact the
Allah of Islam is described in
every Surrah of the Koran as ' the
compassionate, the merciful '.
The God of
religion is, in short, an
anthropomorphic deity. The
difference between him and human
beings is only a difference in
degree, not a
difference in kind. He is an
embodiment of contradictory
attributes; he is a spiritual being, but at the same time he has eyes,
ears, mouth, nose, hands, legs, etc.
He smells incense and enjoys
its pleasant odour; many religions
claim to have recorded his
words in
their sacred books because he
talks since he has a mouth like
human beings. He holds things with
his hands, walks with his legs,
sees with
his eyes and hears with his
ears. He is often appealed to
by worshippers to listen to them, and hear their
prayers. But if he has all these human traits, then he must be a corporeal ( physical)
being,
and if he is a spiritual being, he cannot have these organs,
limbs, and human traits. Again God is
said to be almighty but at the
same time he has human limitations and human weakness such as;
anger, hate,
jealousy, etc that is entailed in
the human attributes which he shares
with human beings. He is unable, for example, to
remove evil from the world which he is said to have
created. Nor is he morally perfect
since he is also subject to anger, hate and jealousy, like human
beings. A being that has all
these human limitations
cannot be
infinite or almighty. Thus, there is an intrinsic
contradiction in the very concept of the God of
religion. For it is an
embodiment of
contradictory attributes, and this means that, as an
anthropomorphic
deity, the God of religion in
Christianity religion, Islam
religion,
Judaism religion, etc, is simply the product of human
imagination. It
is supposedly a spiritual being,
but at the same time, it
demands
blood ( either human or animal blood ) as sacrifice, and it enjoys it!
It is thus no more than the
figment of man's imagination.
I refuse to
accept the anthropomorphic concept of God because it
reduces God to
the level of man who is often
emotional, deceitful and
contradictory.
God is not a physical being and can therefore not have attributes
proper to physical beings. In
fact, no attributes can be
predicated of
him at all because all the attributes expressed in human language can only be predicated of physical
beings and cannot apply to an
immaterial being. In other
words, we do not know and cannot know what
God is, we can only know what he is not. A God is an
entity or a deity
whose real nature cannot be
known by anyone and that makes him God.

THE CHRISTIAN GOD 
The Christian God,
like the God of any other
religion, is an
anthropomorphic deity. The two main distinguishing
features of the Christian God
are his
Trinitarian nature and his
Fatherhood of Jesus Christ. The
Christian God is first and foremost a triune God, that is, as a being it
is constituted by a trinity of
persons. If by the word person
one means an individual substance of a
rational nature, as it is understood in
classical philosophy, then to talk of three persons in one
God amounts to talking of three
ontologically distinct beings
constituting one
being. This of course involves a
contradiction and is therefore
impossible. If they are three persons then they are three distinct
beings and they cannot at the
same time be one thing. To say
that they
are both three and at the same time one is to involve oneself
in self
contradiction. This seems to be
what precisely the christian
doctrine of the trinity is saying. For we are told that one of these three Persons ( the Father ) sent
another one ( the Son ) on a mission to the world. This shows that
they are ontologically distinct / different
beings. When the Second Person had accomplished his
mission, the Third
Person ( the Holy Spirit ) was
also sent by the same Person ( the
Father, who is the First Person ) on a mission to the
world. It was
the First Person ( the Father )
who created the world, it was the
Second Person who ( sent by
the Father ) came to the world
to redeem it, while the Third Person came later to sanctify the world. Each had its own specific role and
function in relation to the world - one is the Creator, the other is the
Redeemer while the third is the
Sanctifier. All these show clearly that the doctrine of the
trinity of God is a doctrine of three
ontologically distinct / different beings
constituting one being, that is,
the doctrine of three beings
being one being, which is obviously
self contradictory and therefore
impossible. The second main
distinguishing feature of the
christian
God, that is, the doctrine that God is the Father of Jesus Christ,
shows clearly the
anthropomorphic nature of the
Christian God. How can God, a spiritual being give birth to a child and therefore have a son ? We are told that he has only
one son ( God so loved the
world that
he sent his only begotten Son ( John.3;16 ). The idea of a God
having a son is, of course, not peculiar to christianity; it is to be found in the mythologies of various peoples all over the world as well as in many other religions, including the African Traditional Religion where
Olokun ( in Benin kingdom /
Edo State ), Orisa-nla ( in Yoruba ), Ala ( in Igbo ) is said to be the Son
of God. It simply shows the
anthropomorphic and mythical
nature of the God of religion.
The christian God gave his only
begotten Son, to the world to
demonstrate
his immense love for the
world, for he is a God of love.
In fact love is the main attribute of the christian God. He is a loving
Father, the
father of all men who takes
loving care of all men. Even the
very hair of every Man's head is
numbered by him and he takes
fatherly care of
everyone. Beautiful and consoling as this doctrine of
God's love for mankind is, it is however
impossible to reconcile with
the stark
reality of so much evil - suffering, misery, tragic
accidents, earthquakes, flood disasters, starvation, dreadful diseases,
etc, which afflict men all over the
world. How can a loving father
who takes fatherly care of his
children look on while his
children are
afflicted with so much evil ? Is
he unable to stop the evil, or to
prevent it ? But he is almighty and so he should be able to prevent
evil from afflicting his children
whom he loves so much. To say, as
theologians do say, that God is not responsible for evil, but
that he
only allows it in order to bring
greater good out of it in the
long run, implies that he does not have full control over the forces of
nature, that he is not omnipotent. This would imply
that the only way
he can bring about the desired good is by first of all allowing evil to afflict and crush men. This would mean that his powers are limited
and that he is not the almighty deity he is believed to be. Thus the doctrines of God's infinite goodness, love and almighty
power are
negated by the stark reality of
evil afflicting mankind in the
world. If the world was actually
created by God then he cannot
be absolved
from responsibility for evil in it, at least the physical evils such as: earthquakes, flood
disasters, destructive storms,
etc. If God is
not responsible for these physical evils in his own world
which he created, who then is
responsible ? Nor is the problem solved by trying to deny the reality of evil by saying as Plotinus, St. Augustine, Aquinas, and others have
done, that evil is not a positive
entity, that it is not a being, but
simply the negation of being.
The reality of evil in the world is simply
undeniable. The concept of God implied in the christian doctrine of the
Fall of man and his
Redemption by Christ raises serious questions
about God's foreknowledge
and his
ability to prevent a foreseen evil. Did God not foresee the Fall of man when he was creating him ? Was he unable to prevent the evil from happening ? Would it not have
been better to prevent the evil
rather than allow it to take place and
then provide a remedy for it
afterwards by way of Redeemption through Jesus
Christ ? Is prevention not better than
cure ? Even if the fault was a
happy one
( felix culpa ) as we are told, it
still remains a fault, an evil,
and as such it would have been
better prevented. Would it not
have been
better to create man in such a
way that he would not do evil
than to create the man who would do evil and then be redeemed
later ( after
the evil had been done )? The
argument by theologians that
God could not have made man free and at the same time prevent him
from doing
evil is based on the erroneous
premise that freedom is
synonymous with the propensity to do evil. There
is no reason why God ( who is
almighty ) could not have
created man who would be free, but would not do evil. For it is quite possible to be free without doing evil.
A free being without the
propensity to do evil is quite
conceivable and
logically possible since freedom and the propensity to
do evil are not
synonymous. God could have
prevented even the very idea
of evil from
coming to Man's mind, he could have prevented evil ideas from occuring to Man's mind so that man
would not even think of any
evil, much less
doing it. Man's Fall could therefore have been prevented by God, so that there would have been no need for Redemption. The
doctrine of
Redemption or Salvation of man by Christ brings out very
clearly the
anthropomorphic nature of the
christian God. Christ redeemed
or saved mankind, we are told, by shedding his blood, by his
death, and the
sacrifice he made of himself
on the cross ( Hebrew 9 & 10 ).
Not only is the idea of God, a spiritual being, demanding human
blood as a
condition for forgiving sin
grossly anthropomorphic and mythical, it is
inconsistent with the picture of God portrayed by
christianity itself
as a loving Father. The idea of a benevolent, loving father demanding
that blood be shed before he can forgive his children their offenses
is repugnant. Could God not
have forgiven mankind without demanding
bloody human sacrifice ? For, Christ's sacrifice on the cross is, de facto, human sacrifice, and the
idea that the salvation ( redemption ) of mankind was achieved only
through human sacrifice offered to God by Christ is only intelligible to a culture which does not find the idea of human sacrifice disgusting.
