Sephora to shut US stores for diversity training by jadoo51(m) : 9:39 pm On Jun 03, 2019

Sephora to shut US stores for diversity training:

Beauty chain Sephora will close its United States of America stores on Wednesday for diversity training, a month after a racial incident involving singer SZA.

The R&B artist said she had been racially profiled while shopping at a Sephora store in California.

The firm told Reuters it was aware of the incident however said the training wasn't "a response to anyone event".

Last year Starbucks held inclusion training amid racial profiling allegations.

In a tweet on 1 May, SZA said while shopping at a Sephora store outside of Los Angeles, an employee she identified as "Sandy" had "called security to make sure I wasn't stealing".

The company responded at the time on Twitter: "You are a part of the Sephora family, and we are committed to ensuring every member of our community feels welcome and included at our stores."

Last year US website Refinery29 reported the singer had previously worked at Sephora.

SZA has been nominated for numerous Grammy awards, and recently collaborated with Kendrick Lamar on the track "All the Stars" which featured on the soundtrack of the film Black Panther.

In a Facebook post, Sephora said it would hold "inclusion workshops" on the morning on 5 June at its US stores as well as its distribution centres and corporate offices.

Sephora did not immediately respond to BBC requests for comment about the training.

Emily Shapiro, a spokesperson for Sephora, told Reuters the store closures were not "a response to any one event," saying that planning for the "inclusivity workshops" had been in progress for months.

Last year Starbucks shut all 8,000 company-owned branches in the US for an afternoon to carry out "racial bias" training.

The move came after the firm had to apologise over the arrest of two black men who were waiting to meet someone in a Starbucks in Philadelphia in May 2018.

The incident sparked calls for a boycott of the coffee chain.

Nanda Devi: Rescued climbers search for missing mountaineers by jadoo51(m) : 10:01 pm On Jun 03, 2019

Nanda Devi: Rescued climbers search for missing mountaineers.

Four British climbers who were rescued from an expedition in the Himalayas have joined an aerial search to find eight fellow mountaineers.

Two Indian air force helicopters are searching the mountains for the missing group, made up of four Britons, two Americans, an Australian and an Indian.

The mountaineers began ascending Nanda Devi on 13 may with the four other climbers, who were rescued on Sunday.

The group of four has helped to narrow down the search area, officials said.

They boarded a helicopter on Monday morning to help search efforts, the BBC's Shalu Yadav said.

Indian rescuers resumed their search on Monday after poor weather hampered progress. Rescuers have said the chances of finding the larger group are "bleak".

The four rescued climbers were named by India TV as Mark Thomas, 44, Ian Wade, 45, Kate Armstrong, 39, and Zachary Quain, 32.

They were airlifted to safety after being spotted early on Sunday at Munsiyari base camp near Nanda Devi. They had returned there to due to harsh weather.

R C Rajguru, police chief of the Pithoragarh district, said on Monday the rescued climbers have helped to give a "rough idea" of where the missing group had been trekking.

The larger group headed for the summit of another unnamed peak, government official Vijay Kumar Jogdanda said.

Both groups remained in touch until 26 May - a day before an avalanche hit the 7,816-metre mountain, according to authorities.

The missing group was led by experienced British mountain guide Martin Moran, whose Scotland-based company Moran Mountain has run numerous expeditions in the Indian Himalayas.

In a statement, his family said they were "deeply saddened" and were pressing for the search area to be widened.

Moran Mountain confirmed on Saturday that it was working with authorities and the British Association of Mountain Guides (BMG) to gather information.

BMG said in a statement that the group had decided to attempt the unnamed summit - referred to as Peak 6447m - as part of their acclimatisation training before the planned ascent of Nanda Devi East.

Mr Moran had sent a message on 25 May indicating all was well, the weather was good and the group intended to attempt Peak 6447m in the early hours of 26 May, BMG said.

But base camp support staff alerted another BMG guide, Mark Thomas, when Mr Moran's group failed to return on the expected date. The rescue effort began on Saturday.

The rest of the group have been named locally as John McLaren, Rupert Whewell and University of York lecturer Dr Richard Payne from the UK; US nationals Anthony Sudekum and Ronald Beimel; Australian Ruth McCance and Indian guide Chetan Pandey.

Mr Jogdanda said on Sunday tents had been spotted by an aerial search, but that no human presence had been seen.

"Chances of survival are bleak," he added.

Singapore fighter jets escort Scoot plane after bomb hoax by jadoo51(m) : 10:14 pm On Jun 03, 2019

Singapore fighter jets escort Scoot plane after bomb hoax:

Singapore's air force sent 2 fighter jets to escort an incoming passenger plane over a bomb threat which turned out to be a hoax, say officials.

There were 144 passengers on board scoot flight TR385 from Cebu in the Philippines on Sunday when police were alerted to a security threat.

A 13-year-old unidentified male passenger was allegedly behind the hoax, according to local media outlets.

He is currently assisting police with their investigations, said the reports.

A spokesman from Singapore carrier Scoot told news outlet The Straits Times that all 144 passengers and six crew members onboard the plane landed safely at 16:49 (08:49 GMT) on Sunday at Changi Airport.

Singapore's Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen later said Singapore would "take every threat as real until proven otherwise".

"Two [fighter jets] scrambled to escort an inbound Scoot plane but it turned out to be a false alarm," Mr Ng said in a post on Facebook.

"[However], the Republic of Singapore Air Force will stay ever vigilant."

Germany's Merkel vows to carry on despite coalition setback by jadoo51(m) : 10:47 pm On Jun 03, 2019

Germany's Merkel vows to carry on despite coalition setback:

German Chancellor Angela Merkel says her coalition government will continue despite the surprise resignation of the leader of its junior partner, the Social Democratic Party (SPD).

Mrs Merkel said she respected the "far-reaching" decision by Andrea Nahles.

Ms Nahles resigned after her centre-left party came third, behind Mrs Merkel's Christian Democrats (CDU) and the Greens, in the European elections.

She had been criticised by the SPD's left for remaining in the coalition.

Ms Nahles became SPD leader in April 2018, replacing Martin Schulz who also resigned following the party's poor performance in elections. She was expected to run for the position again and her resignation took analysts by surprise.

The coalition between the CDU and the SPD is due to last until federal elections in 2021, but correspondents say Ms Nahles's resignation could lead to the SPD leaving, triggering a snap poll.

Sudan crisis: Death toll rises to 60, opposition says by jadoo51(m) : 5:47 pm On Jun 05, 2019

Sudan crisis: Death toll rises to 60, opposition says:

The number of people killed in Sudan has risen to 60, an opposition doctors' group says, as paramilitary forces push deeper into Khartoum.

The revised death toll came after two days of unrest which began when forces of the Transitional Military Council (TMC) fired on unarmed protesters.

Members of a feared paramilitary group have reportedly been roaming the streets attacking civilians since.

The military has faced international condemnation for the deadly crackdown.

However, an attempt by the UK and Germany at the UN to call on the Sudanese military to work towards finding a solution was blocked by China, who were backed by Russia.

Demonstrators had been occupying the square in front of the military headquarters since 6 April, five days before President Omar al-Bashir was overthrown after 30 years in power.

Their representatives had been negotiating a deal with the TMC, and had agreed a three-year transition, culminating in elections.

But on Monday, forces moved in to forcibly move the protesters from the square.

Many Khartoum residents blamed the Rapid Support Forces for the crackdown. The paramilitary unit - formerly known as the Janjaweed - gained notoriety in the Darfur conflict in western Sudan, which began in 2003.

The TMC then announced polls would be held within nine months. The demonstrators had argued that a longer period was needed in order to guarantee fair elections and dismantle the political network associated with the former government.

Nanda Devi: India starts 'risky' mission to retrieve climbers' bodies by jadoo51(m) : 5:57 pm On Jun 05, 2019

Nanda Devi: India starts 'risky' mission to retrieve climbers' bodies.

Indian officials have begun a risky mission to retrieve the bodies of 5 climbers discovered days after they went missing in the Himalayas.

Four Britons, 2 Americans, an Australian and an Indian made up the missing climbers, who had been attempting India's second-highest peak.

Officials told the BBC the operation was "very risky" due to harsh weather, adding success would be a "miracle".

The bodies were spotted by an Indian rescue mission on Monday.

The BBC's Shalu Yadav, reporting from the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand, said the retrieval operation was "unprecedented".

"Authorities told us that the terrain was very difficult and if they were able to retrieve the bodies, it will be nothing short of a miracle," she adds.

A helicopter carrying four mountaineers from the Indo Tibetan Border police and five Air Force personnel set off towards Nana Devi on Wednesday morning.

"The helicopter will attempt to drop the mountaineers on the peak. If unsuccessful, a different strategy will be adopted," officials told the BBC.

It's believed that Nanda Devi was hit by multiple avalanches when the group was trying to scale one of the peaks there.

Contact was lost with the climbers on 26 May, a day before an avalanche hit the 7,816-metre mountain.

Four other climbers who were part of the group ascending the peak were rescued on Sunday and have since been assisting rescue efforts.

They had turned back early because of the bad weather, and were the last ones in contact with the larger group.

Darwin shooting: Banned shotgun used in four killings, police say by jadoo51(m) : 6:17 pm On Jun 05, 2019

Darwin shooting: Banned shotgun used in four killings, police say.

A gunman who killed four people and injured another in the Australian town of Darwin used an illegal pump-action shotgun, police say.

The 45-year-old suspect, who was known to police, was arrested about an hour after the first shots were fired on Tuesday.

Police said the gunman carried out attacks at several locations and may have been searching for a "specific individual".

It was not terror-related, they added.

Authorities have not identified the victims or the suspect.

Mass shootings in Australia have been a rare occurrence since the country overhauled its gun laws in 1996, in the wake of a shooting in Tasmania that left 35 people dead.

Those reforms included restrictions on gun ownership and the banning of all semi-automatic and automatic firearms.

The weapon used on Tuesday was a prohibited 12-gauge pump-action shotgun, said Northern Territory Police Commissioner Reece Kershaw.

The alleged gunman, who had been on parole since January, was wearing an electronic tag at the time.

Police said he travelled to several places across the city, including the Palms Hotel in the suburb of Woolner. There he allegedly opened fire in a number of rooms before fleeing.

One person was reportedly killed at the motel while another person was wounded.

Another person was killed at Buff Club, another at Gardens Hill Crescent and another at Jolly Street. Police said the suspect also went to the Peter McAulay Centre - a police operations base.

Witnesses said the suspect appeared to have been searching for a specific person called "Alex".

"We know he was looking for one individual," Commissioner Kershaw told reporters on Wednesday.

The suspect remains in police custody at the Royal Darwin Hospital and is due to be charged with murder, he added.

Northern Territory Chief Minister Michael Gunner said officials would conduct an urgent review of all prisoners on parole in the wake of the shootings.

"The Northern Territory Government will do everything in its power to determine what led to these tragic events and how this violence occurred," Mr Gunner said.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said on Tuesday the shootings were a "terrible act of violence".

Australia saw its worst mass shooting incident in more than 20 years last year when seven members of the same family died in a murder-suicide.

More recently, a man was killed and three others wounded in a shooting outside a popular nightclub in Melbourne in April.

Donald Trump to join Queen for 75th D-Day anniversary by jadoo51(m) : 6:28 pm On Jun 05, 2019

Donald Trump to join Queen for 75th D-Day anniversary:

US President Donald Trump will join the Queen in Portsmouth to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings, on the final day of his UK state visit.

Theresa May will host 15 world leaders to honour the largest combined land, air and naval operation in history.

Figures from every country that fought alongside the UK will be attending.

Those countries have agreed a joint statement to mark the event, pledging to ensure the "unimaginable horror" of the Second World War is not repeated.

Called "the D-Day proclamation", the 16 signatories - including the UK and the United States - commit to working together to "resolve international tensions peacefully".

The UK prime minister will use the occasion to call for continued Western unity in tackling what she will call "new and evolving security threats".

The commemorations to mark the Allied invasion of northern France come a day after Mr Trump had a series of political meetings as part of his three-day state visit to the UK.

The president used a TV interview to play down his earlier suggestion that the NHS would be included in post-Brexit trade talks between the US and the UK.

During a joint news conference with the UK prime minister, Mr Trump had said "everything is on the table" in future discussions between the countries.

Florida school shooting: Parkland officer arrested over inaction by jadoo51(m) : 6:54 pm On Jun 05, 2019

Florida school shooting: Parkland officer arrested over inaction.

An armed officer who stood outside a Florida school as a gunman killed 17 individuals has been arrested and faces multiple charges, including child neglect and perjury.

Scot Peterson, a security guard at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas high school, did not enter as shots rang out last year and later resigned.

US President Donald Trump called him a "coward" for not acting.

Mr Peterson said he did not know where the gunfire was coming from.

Seventeen students were killed in the massacre in Parkland on Valentine's Day in 2018.

Nikolas Cruz, 19, a former student at the school, has been charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder. Police have said he admitted the shooting.

Soon afterwards, authorities release footage showing Mr Peterson waiting outside the school as the shooting was taking place.

Following an investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), Mr Peterson was arrested on Tuesday on seven counts of neglect of a child, three counts of culpable negligence and one count of perjury.

The investigation showed Mr Peterson "did absolutely nothing" to prevent the shooting, FDLE Commissioner Rick Swearingen said in a statement.

"There can be no excuse for his complete inaction and no question that his inaction cost lives," he added.

Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel voiced his anger after viewing the footage of Mr Peterson remaining outside the building for four minutes while the killings were taking place. The shooting lasted just six minutes.

"I am devastated. Sick to my stomach. He never went in," Sheriff Israel said, adding that he should have entered and "killed the killer".

President Trump said the officer "certainly did a poor job" and branded him a coward.

Mr Peterson maintained he believed the shots were coming from outside the school.

He told NBC that he "didn't get it right", but added: "Those are my kids in there. I never would have sat there and let my kids get slaughtered.""

D-Day: May and Macron in France to mark 75th anniversary by jadoo51(m) : 7:49 pm On Jun 06, 2019

D-Day: May and Macron in France to mark 75th anniversary.

Theresa may and French President Emmanuel macron have joined D-day veterans in northern France for a second day of events to mark the 75th anniversary of the Normandie invasion.

A lone piper played to mark the moment when the first United Kingdom soldiers went ashore.

Mrs may and the French president are attending an inauguration ceremony for a memorial to honour British troops who died in the Battle of Normandie.

Later, Donald Trump will join Mr Macron at the US war cemetery at Omaha Beach.

D-Day was the start of the liberation of Nazi-occupied western Europe.

Hundreds of veterans have gathered in Normandy for the anniversary of the largest combined land, air and naval operation in history.

The day's commemorations mark key events in the operation, which started on 6 June 1944.

Overnight, serving British soldiers marched across the first bridge captured on French soil - 75 years to the minute when the key strategic target was taken from the Nazis.

In 1944 it took troops less than 15 minutes to seize Pegasus Bridge, Benouville, clearing the way for the Allies to storm the beaches hours later.

At 06:26 BST - the exact minute the first British troops landed on the beaches in 1944 - a lone piper played on a section of the Mulberry Harbour in the town of Arromanches.

Mr Macron and Mrs May - in one of her final engagements as Conservative leader - are in Ver-sur-Mer to see the first stone laid for a memorial to commemorate the 20,000 British troops who died there in the summer of 1944.

The British Normandy Memorial is being built on a hillside overlooking Gold Beach - one of the key sites for British troops during the D-Day landings.

Once completed, it will record the names of the 22,442 members of the British armed forces who died.

Mrs May will then join the Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall and First Minister Nicola Sturgeon for a service in Bayeux - the first city in France to be liberated by the invasion.

That will be followed by a service at Bayeux War Cemetery, where many of the fallen were buried.

Meanwhile, Mr Macron will accompany US President Donald Trump at an event at the US war cemetery at Omaha Beach, Colleville-sur-Mer.

Mr Trump tweeted an image of the landings ahead of the event, quoting himself.

US-Mexico talks: Trump says more progress needed to avoid tariffs by jadoo51(m) : 8:07 pm On Jun 06, 2019

US-Mexico talks: Trump says more progress needed to avoid tariffs.

US President Donald Trump has said "not nearly enough" progress is being made in negotiations with Mexico to avert his threatened tariffs.

Trump administration officials will meet for a second day of talks with Mexico's foreign minister in Washington on Thursday.

Mr Trump vowed import duties of 50 can take effect on Monday unless Mexico stems the flow of migrants to the United States of America.

Those numbers reached their highest level in more than a decade last month.

US Vice-President Mike Pence and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo held talks with Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard at the White House on Wednesday, but the 90-minute meeting ended without agreement.

Mr Ebrard told a news conference afterwards the negotiations had been cordial, but tariffs were not even discussed.

"The dialogue was focused on migration flows and what Mexico is doing or is proposing to the United States, our concern about the Central American situation," he said.

The US president, who is in Europe for World War Two commemorations, warned on Twitter that the tariffs would go ahead next Monday if there is no breakthrough.
Under his proposal, duties would rise by 5% every month on goods including cars, beer, tequila, fruit and vegetables, reaching 25% by October.

Mr Trump wants Mexico to stop the hundreds of thousands of mostly Central American migrants who have been seeking entry to the US this year.

The US president announced the planned Mexico tariffs last week on Twitter, catching members of his own party and financial markets unawares.

China's Xi praises 'best friend' Putin during Russia visit by jadoo51(m) : 8:23 pm On Jun 06, 2019

China's Xi praises 'best friend' Putin during Russia visit:

Chinese President Xi Jinping has described Russia's Vladimir Putin as his "best friend" during a three-day visit to Moscow focusing on trade and relations between the 2 countries.

The visit comes as China-US relations have soured over a bitter trade war.

Russia had decided on a pivot to the east years ago after ties worsened with the West over the Ukraine conflict.

The two sides have signed a package of trade deals and Mr Xi also unveiled two pandas for the Moscow zoo.

The Chinese president arrived on Wednesday and later gave a press conference where he said he had a "deep personal friendship" with his Russian counterpart.

"In the past six years, we have met nearly 30 times. Russia is the country that I have visited the most times, and President Putin is my best friend and colleague," Mr Xi said.

Mr Putin echoed the praise saying he was "pleased to say that Russian-Chinese relations have reached an unprecedented level. It is a global partnership and strategic cooperation."

The alliance between the two countries has intensified since both Moscow and Beijing feel alienated by Europe and especially the US.

Moscow's relationship with the West turned sour when Russia was put under sanctions for its involvement in the Ukraine conflict five years ago. It has also been criticised for assisting the Assad regime in Syria in 2015.

China's ties with the US have deteriorated since the Trump administration appeared to turn its back on globalisation in favour of economic national protectionism.

The two countries are currently embroiled in a trade war and tit-for-tat tariffs that intensive talks have so far failed to resolve.

With a shared sense of rejection from the West, Russia and China have hence moved closer together, both in economic and military cooperation, observers say.

The partnership has already seen an increase in trade, which grew by 25% in 2018 to hit a record $108bn (£85bn) according to the Kremlin.

China-Russia economic relationship
China is Russia's top trading partner; Russia is China's tenth-largest trading partner
The majority of Russian exports to China are raw materials, including energy-related products
Most of Chinese exports to Russia are equipment, machinery, and consumer goods
The Power of Siberia pipeline connecting Russia to China, due to be completed this year, is reportedly valued at $400bn
Other strategic projects include energy and infrastructure projects, as well as the construction of a passenger aircraft
China foreign direct investment into Russia hit $140m in 2017

Sudan crisis: Official admits to 46 protest deaths by jadoo51(m) : 8:49 pm On Jun 06, 2019

Sudan crisis: Official admits to 46 protest deaths.

A Sudanese official has denied that at least 100 individuals were killed by a paramilitary unit during protests, saying that the number was at most 46.

Doctors linked to the opposition on Wednesday said at least 100 individuals had been killed in the capital, Khartoum, amid pro-democracy protests.

They said forty bodies were pulled from the river Nile in Khartoum on Tuesday.

Authorities had initially stayed quiet, but a health ministry official put the number at 46 early on Thursday.

Sudanese opposition activists have rejected an offer of talks from the country's military council, saying it cannot be trusted amid a violent crackdown on protesters.

Residents told the BBC they were living in fear in the capital.

The deputy head of the military council defended the violent suppression, claiming that the protesters had been infiltrated by rogue elements and drug dealers.

"We will not allow chaos and we will not go back on our convictions. There is no way back. We must impose the respect of the country by law," said Mohammed Hamadan - also known as Hemedti - on Wednesday.

Sudan has been controlled by a military council since pro-democracy protests led to the ousting of veteran President Omar al-Bashir in April, after 30 years of authoritarian rule.

Demonstrators had been occupying the square in front of the military headquarters, while their representatives had negotiated with the military council and agreed a three-year transition that would culminate in elections.

But on Monday, security forces swept in and opened fire on unarmed protesters in the square. General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the head of the military council, announced that the agreement was cancelled and an election would take place within nine months.

On Wednesday, however, after Saudi Arabia publicly called for a resumption of talks, Gen Burhan reversed course and said the military council would "open our arms to negotiate with no restriction".

The offer was rejected by the opposition. "The Sudanese people are not open for talks," said Amjad Farid, a spokesman for the Sudanese Professionals Association (SPA) which spearheaded the protests against Mr Bashir.

"The Sudanese people are not open to this TMC (Transitional Military Council) that kills people and we need justice and accountability before talks about any political process," Mr Farid told the AFP news agency.

'State actor' behind UAE tanker attacks by jadoo51(m) : 6:27 pm On Jun 07, 2019

'State actor' behind UAE tanker attacks:

The United Arab Emirates has told the UN Security Council that a "state actor" was most likely behind attacks on four tankers off its coast.

The May 12 attacks bore the hallmarks of a "sophisticated and coordinated operation," according to its report.

The UAE did not say who it thought was behind the attacks, which also targeted vessels from Saudi Arabia and Norway.

The US has accused Iran of being behind the attacks, but Tehran has denied this and called for an investigation.

The attacks took place on 12 May, within UAE territorial waters east of the emirate of Fujairah, just outside the Strait of Hormuz.

The UAE authorities said four ships were targeted in a "sabotage attack".

There were no casualties but Saudi Arabia said two of its ships had suffered "significant damage".

Another tanker was Norwegian-registered, while the fourth was UAE-flagged.

US National Security Adviser John Bolton, a long-time advocate for regime change in Tehran, said it was "clear" Iran was behind the attack.

The US sees the attacks as part of a wider "campaign" against it and its allies.

The Iranian foreign ministry branded the accusation "ludicrous".

Mexico to deploy forces on Guatemala border by jadoo51(m) : 6:49 pm On Jun 07, 2019

Mexico to deploy forces on Guatemala border:

Mexico has deployed 6,000 members of its National Guard on its border with Guatemala in an attempt to stem the flow of migrants heading to the U.S.A..

Mexico's foreign minister Marcelo Ebrard is in Washington making an attempt to stop the United States of America from placing trade tariffs on Mexican goods over illegal migration.

US President Donald Trump has vowed to enact import duties of 50 on Monday if no agreement is reached.

On Wednesday, he said "not nearly enough" progress was being made.

After the latest talks on Thursday, Mr Ebrard said he was "an optimistic man."

He said forces would be stationed on Mexico's southern border with Guatemala to prevent migrants entering the country.

"We have explained that there are 6,000 men and that they will be deployed there," he said, adding that talks would continue Friday.

Under the US president's proposal, duties would rise by 5% every month on goods including cars, beer, tequila, fruit and vegetables, reaching 25% by October.

Mr Trump wants Mexico to stop the hundreds of thousands of mostly Central American migrants who have been seeking entry to the US this year.

The president announced the planned Mexico tariffs last week on Twitter, catching members of his own party and financial markets unawares.

US Customs and Border Protection announced this week that migrant arrests had surged in May to the highest level in more than a decade.

Border Patrol apprehended 132,887 migrants attempting to enter the US from Mexico in May, marking a 33% increase from the month before.

It said 84,542 were families and 11,507 unaccompanied children.

The arrests were the highest monthly total since Mr Trump took office.

Another 11,391 migrants were deemed "inadmissible" and turned away after arriving at US ports of entry, bringing the overall figure to 144,278.

"We are in a full-blown emergency, and I cannot say this stronger, the system is broken," said acting CBP Commissioner John Sanders.

D-Day anniversary: Putin says lack of invitation 'not a problem' by jadoo51(m) : 7:08 pm On Jun 07, 2019

D-Day anniversary: Putin says lack of invitation 'not a problem'.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said it is "not a problem" that he was not invited to join other world leaders marking the 75th anniversary of the D-day landings in northern France.

Mr Putin, who was invited to the 70th anniversary event in 2014, said he had "enough business" of his own in Russia.

The comments came after his government claimed D-day was "not a game-changer".

Russia often accuses the West of failing to properly acknowledge the Soviet Union's role in World War Two.

World leaders, including US President Donald Trump, attended Thursday's memorial, where they paid tribute to the Allied troops who attacked German forces on the coast of northern France on 6 June, 1944 in history's largest sea and air invasion.

Mr Putin joined the last major commemoration in 2014, but was not invited this year. Speaking at an economic forum in St Petersburg, he said that the lack of an invitation was not an issue.

"We also don't invite everyone to every event. Why should I be invited everywhere? I have enough business of my own here," he said.

His remarks came a day after Russia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs insisted that the significance of D-Day in the outcome of the war should not be overplayed.

Grammy-winning musician Dr John dies at 77:

Grammy-winning american singer Dr John has died at the age of 77 after suffering a heart attack.

The New Orleans-born musician died on Thursday, according to a message posted on his official Twitter account.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame singer combined the genres of blues, pop, jazz, boogie woogie and rock and roll.

A statement said: "Towards the break of day June 6, iconic music legend Malcolm John Rebennack, Jr, known as Dr John, passed away of a heart attack."

It added: "The family thanks all whom shared his unique musical journey & requests privacy at this time. Memorial arrangements will be announced in due course."

Blondie lead singer Debbie Harry was among those to pay tribute, sharing a picture of herself alongside the six-time Grammy winner.

Former Beatles drummer Ringo Starr also tweeted a picture, along with the message: "God bless Dr John, peace and love to all his family. I love the doctor, peace and love."

His career started in the late 1950s, when he became prominent as a pianist and singer on the New Orleans music scene, before gaining recognition as a solo performer with the release of his album Gris-Gris in 1968.

Dr John, who successfully battled heroin addiction, is perhaps best known for his 1973 hit, Right Place, Wrong Time.

Peterborough by-election: Labour beats Brexit Party to hold seat by jadoo51(m) : 7:39 pm On Jun 07, 2019

Peterborough by-election: Labour beats Brexit Party to hold seat.

The Labour Party has narrowly seen off a challenge from the Brexit Party to hold on to its Peterborough seat in a by-election.

Union activist Lisa Forbes managed to retain the constituency for Labour, beating Nigel Farage's candidate mike greene by 683 votes.

Ms Forbes hailed her "significant" victory and said it showed people had "rejected the politics of division".

The Brexit Party said "no seat is safe" after its performance.

The by-election was called after Fiona Onasanya - who was convicted of lying over a speeding offence - became the first MP to be ousted under recall rules.

Both Labour and the Brexit Party had jostled for position as the bookmakers' favourite up until the result was announced.

The recently formed Eurosceptic group was vying to secure its first MP after gaining 29 seats in the European elections two weeks ago.

But, as the winner was declared in Peterborough shortly after 02:00 BST, a chant erupted from Ms Forbes' supporters.

In a victory speech, she said her win had "shown that the politics of hope can win regardless of the odds".

"Despite the differing opinions across our city, the fact that the Brexit Party have been rejected here in Peterborough shows that the politics of division will not win," she said.

Mr Farage made a brief appearance at the count before the result was announced but left without talking to reporters.

Meanwhile the Conservatives, who have traditionally tussled over the marginal seat with the opposition, fell into third place.

Hard-fought campaign
A total of 15 candidates stood
Turnout was 48.4%, down from 67.5% in the 2017 general election, when Labour beat the Tories by 607 votes
Peterborough, where voters backed Leave by 61% to 39% in the 2016 referendum, had been viewed as fertile ground for the Brexit Party
Its hopes for a win had been boosted after underwhelming results for Labour and the Conservatives in last month's European elections
Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, former Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Tory big guns Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt visited the city during the hard-fought campaign
Theresa May, who will officially resign as Conservative leader later, did not visit the constituency
BBC Look East political correspondent Ben Schofield said the Brexit Party had hoped to campaign - and win - on national issues and discontent with the "Westminster elite".

But, he said, Labour's activists had managed to win by focusing on local issues.

Theresa May officially steps down as Tory leader by jadoo51(m) : 8:31 pm On Jun 07, 2019

Theresa May officially steps down as Tory leader:

Theresa may will officially step down as the leader of the conservative party on Friday, however will remain as prime minister until her successor is chosen.

Mrs may announced her resignation two weeks ago, saying it was a matter of deep regret that she had been unable to deliver Brexit.

Eleven Conservative MPs are vying to replace her as party leader and ultimately, prime minister.

Nominations open from 10:00 BST on Monday and close at 17:00 BST that day.

Mrs May remains acting leader while the contest takes place.

The UK was originally meant to leave the European Union on 29 March. That was then pushed back to 12 April and eventually 31 October after Mrs May failed to get MPs to approve her deal.

She announced her resignation, saying she had done everything she could to try to persuade MPs to support the withdrawal deal which she had negotiated with the European Union but it was now time for a new prime minister to try to deliver Brexit.

Leadership candidates need eight MPs to back them. MPs will then vote for their preferred candidates in a series of secret ballots held on 13, 18, 19 and 20 June.

Charles Walker of the Conservative backbench 1922 committee, which sets the rules, said on Thursday: "We are aiming to have two people by Thursday 20 June."

The final two will be put to a vote of members of the wider Conservative Party, with a winner expected to be announced in the week of 22 July.

While the contest does not officially start until Mrs May steps down, candidates have already been jostling for position.

How the next prime minister gets a Brexit deal through Parliament and whether they would countenance a no-deal exit has been the dominant question of the campaign so far.

Dominic Raab's suggestion at a hustings on Wednesday that he would be prepared to shut down Parliament - the process known as prorogation - to ensure the UK leaves the EU on 31 October has been criticised by his rivals. And Commons Speaker John Bercow said on Thursday it was "simply not going to happen".

Conservative leadership contender Michael Gove has said the UK must not be bound by a "fixed" date if it needs slightly more time to get a deal.

Others, such as Mr Raab and Boris Johnson, insist the UK must leave on 31 October, whether it has approved a deal with Brussels or not.
