A teenager, Omobowale Sunmola, yesterday told a Lagos high court in Igbosere that her stepfather and his mother allegedly killed her elder brother and dumped him in a canal.

She told Justice Sedoten Ogunsanya that the incident occurred at their Maryland, Lagos home in 2014.

She said she was 11 at that time, adding that she was about to begin Junior secondary school (JSS) one, while her brother, Tunde, was 13.

Omobowale, now 17, testified during the trial of her mother, Margaret Olufunmilayo Odunlade, her stepfather, Folorunsho Emmanuel and his mother, Funke Maxwell, for the alleged offence.

Odunlade, Emmanuel and Maxwell were arraigned by the Lagos State Government in 2014, on a two-count charge of manslaughter and misconduct with regard to a body.

Prosecuting counsel Adebayo Haroun said the alleged offences were committed about 6am, on August 2, 2014, at 17, Emmanuel Street, Maryland, Ikeja, Lagos.

He alleged that the defendants killed Tunde Sunmola by beating him up and not taking him to the hospital for treatment of injuries he sustained on his leg.

Odunlade was also accused of dumping Tunde’s body in a canal.

Omobowale, led in evidence by Haroun, testified as of the third prosecution witness.

The witness said at the time, she lived with her mother, stepfather and his mum, while Tunde lived in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, with their grandmother, Mrs. Arinola Sunmola.

She said Tunde was eager to see her and their mother, so their grandmother persuaded his mother to come to Ijebu with her (Sunmola) and take him to Lagos on August 1.

Omobowale said when they got to Lagos,


“my mother asked Tunde to start moving ahead of us and when I asked her why she said she didn’t want people in the area to know that Tunde was her son.

That night when my stepfather returned from work, he asked my mother, ‘who is this boy?’

Following the conclusion of testimonies, Justice Sedoten Ogunsanya adjourned further hearing till June 26.

Two days after being abducted, an expatriate engineer has been found dead in Kano with Police commencing investigations. The corpse of the abducted expatriate Engineer on Tuesday in Kano has been found.

The expatriate, an employee of Triacta Construction Company was working on the underpass bridge at Dangi roundabout by zoo road before he was abducted on Tuesday morning around 7.00am.

Kano Police Command spokesman DSP Abdullahi Haruna Confirmed that the corpse of the Lebanese was found on Maiduguri road on Thursday evening.

They report that Guardiola believes Kompany's dressing-room influence is crucial to the team, so much so that his fitness is not important to the deal. He has seen his role in the team diminished in recent years, with Guardiola preferring the likes of Aymeric Laporte and ​John Stones, but City feel as though Kompany can still make an impact from the sidelines.

The 32-year-old could find himself falling further down the pecking order next season, with Guardiola said to be on the lookout for a new central defender during the summer. Ajax's Matthijs de Ligt is thought to be high on the Spaniard's wish list, which would make first-team opportunities hard to come by for Kompany.

As a result, he is expected to take a sizeable pay cut in order to extend his stay with the defending ​Premier League champions.

The last four years of Kompany's career have been ravaged by injury, forcing him to miss a total of 108 matches since the start of 2015. Barcelona are reportedly 'ready to listen to offers' for Philippe Coutinho, but neither a return to former club Liverpool nor a controversial switch to Manchester United seem likely.


Coutinho has seen his dream move to Barça turn sour, after completing the transfer worth up to €160m (£142m) including add-ons in January 2018, but failing to nail down a permanent place in the team.

It seems that a long-term position as a replacement for Camp Nou legend Andres Iniesta hasn't worked, while he has been displaced by French winger Ousmane Dembele in the wide left role that he also initially occupied during his time in Spain.

It is perhaps telling that in Barça's last game, with Dembele sidelined, Coutinho was still just a substitute for the final minute. Ernesto Valverde instead preferred a four-man midfield with Sergio Busquets, Ivan Rakitic, Arturo Vidal and Arthur.

According to Goal, Barça will listen to and discuss offers in excess of €80m (£69m). It would represent a significant loss on the €120m up front price they paid for the Brazilian just over a year ago, but there are limited options in terms of clubs he could actually join.

Speaking in an interview with NBC Sports (via the ​Evening Standard), the 28-year-old listed some of the obvious candidates among his inspirations, including the 2018 Ballon d'Or winner.

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday recommended the Senate Leader, Ahmad Lawan (APC, Yobe) for the position of Senate President in the ninth Assembly, Daily Trust reliably gathered.

The recommendation was made during a meeting last night at the Presidential Villa, Abuja

In attendance were President Muhammadu Buhari, 11 governors, national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Adams Oshiomhole and senators-elect, of the ruling party.

Multiple sources at the meeting that lasted for about two hours, said Oshiomhole announced the recommendation in the presence of the three other

contenders for the Senate Presidency namely Senator Ali Ndume (Borno), Senator Danjuma Goje (Gombe) and Senator Abdullahi Adamu (Nasarawa).

Senator Bello Mandiya (APC Katsina) last night confirmed that the party had recommended Senator Lawan.

Sources told Daily Trust that ranking senators have started lobbying for important positions in the Senate.

Senator Goje is said to be working to retain his position as chairman appropriation committee while Sen. Abdullahi Adamu is being considered to succeed Lawan as the Senate leader.

One of the Senators-elect who did not want to be mentioned also confirmed the story.

He said: “We were all shocked when he (Oshiomhole) told us that Lawan is the next Senate President. He did not allow us to speak before they directed that the National Anthem be recited,” he said.

Another lawmaker-elect, said when Oshiomhole mentioned Lawan as the next Senate President, president Buhari said he was in support of the party’s position.

Lawan, a ranking lawmaker was the preferred candidate of the APC in 2015, but Senator Bukola Saraki, with the massive support of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmakers, dribbled the party, to clinch the position.

There has been intense politicking between Senators-elect from North East and North Central geo-political zones over the Senate presidency position. The ninth assembly is expected to be inaugurated in June, this year.

The governors in attendance were those of Kebbi, Zamfara, Plateau, Jigawa, Kaduna, Lagos, Osun, Oyo, Borno, Yobe and Kogi states. The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha was also in attendance.

Also in attendance, was the Anambra South Senator-elect, Ifeanyi Ubah, who is of the Young Peoples Party (YPP).

Around 9:pm, after Oshiomhole delivered his speech, journalists were excused from the venue of the meeting. The Senior Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, asked the journalists to leave, saying “It’s time for family talk”.

Oshiomhole said the meeting was convened to map out strategy on how to come up with the leadership of the ninth Assembly. He said the APC so far has 65 senators-elect and 223 Reps-elect.

With majority at the both chambers, he said APC will produce all the presiding officers, the Senate president, deputy Senate president, Speaker and the deputy speaker.

He said unlike in the present parliament, the APC will produce chairmen of strategic committees in the ninth Assembly.

Oshiomhole said the APC lawmakers-elect were voted to give President Buhari the needed support for him to take radical reform for the development of the country.

“Nigerians voted for us to take charge of the executive and the legislature. This meeting is to discuss the leadership question in a win, win way. We do not need to do business with the opposition when we have the numbers,” he said.

Oshiomhole said out of the 16 senators who dumped the APC, only one, Dino Melaye was reelected, because “the chamber will be boring without an entertainer”.

He described Uba, the YPP Senator-elect who attended the meeting, “as a smart guy who want to belong to the people’s party.”
