FG reverses ban on international Basketball by Sirdave7(m) : 3:39 pm On Jun 24, 2022

The Federal Government has rescinded its decision to suspend Nigeria’s basketball teams from all international competitions.

The Permanent Secretary Ministry of Youth and Sports Development Ismaila Abubakar disclosed this at a news conference in Abuja on Thursday.

He said the latest decision is based on a letter of appeal from the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), signed by Mister Musa Kida.

“President Muhammadu Buhari, being one that is committed to youth development and desirous of ensuring that they are availed of all opportunities in sports and other endeavors considered the appeal and in the overriding spirit of national interest, love for our youth, and in order to avoid sending basket development into a long period of suspension when NBBF have now committed to the resolution of the issues which precipitated the withdrawal in the first place has approved the return of Nigeria to international basketball immediately,” Abubakar said in a statement after the briefing.

“In securing this approval, of note is the caution that the laws of Nigeria cannot be subjugated to any other law, and every Nigerian entity must respect Nigerian laws and authority governing various sectors. Failure to do this, as with any constitutionally bound sovereign nation will attract sanctions.”

He explained that the “appeal letter also critically gave some key
undertakings: to immediately set in motion the process of status review or
constitutional amendments from stakeholders as collated by the Ministry of
Youth and Sports Development; to set up a high-powered team to reconcile all
contending parties in the basketball family at home and abroad, and a
commitment to work with the Ministry in the governance and development of
basketball among other things.”

He said President Muhammadu Buhari has manded the ministry to ensure the implementation of the undertakings by the NBBF and “report back to Mr. President on progress”.

Before the reversal of the ban, FIBA had replaced the D’Tigress with Mali ahead of the FIBA Women’s World Cup to be held later in the year.

INEC denies extending voters registration, insists on June 30th by Sirdave7(m) : 3:46 pm On Jun 24, 2022

Electoral Commission (INEC) has denied extending the deadline of the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR), describing the report that it has agreed to extend the deadline by 60 days as false.

Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Electoral Matters, Aishatu Jibril Dukku, had while briefing lawmakers told members during a plenary session yesterday that the Commission had agreed to extend the CVR by 60 days. “The Committee held a meeting with INEC yesterday (Tuesday) and they agreed to extend the CVR, all our resolutions were approved,” she said.

But responding, Chief Press Secretary to the INEC chairman, Rotimi Oyekanmi, clarified that the Commission has not announced an extension of the CVR deadline.

The exercise, which was meant to end on June 30, has been greeted by calls for an extension. Also, a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja had stopped INEC from ending the exercise until all eligible voters had been registered.

MEANWHILE, the House of Representatives has faulted media reports associating it with the extension of the ongoing CVR. The House spokesperson, Benjamin Kalu, said it was untrue that the shift of the INEC voter registration was announced on the floor of the House yesterday.

Flanked by the chairman, of the House Committee on INEC, Hajia Aisha Dukku, he said the decision on the shift is left to Prof Mahmoud Yakubu-led INEC to take.

Kalu acknowledged that INEC may not be able to adhere to the recently adopted motion of the House, which demanded an extension of the exercise by two additional months in view of the extant provision of the electoral amendment Act and the 1999 Constitution as amended.

He reiterated the resolve of the House to ensure that eligible voters are not disenfranchised in the 2023 poll.

Dismissed sergeant to die by hanging for killing driver over 100 Naira by Sirdave7(m) : 5:13 pm On Jun 30, 2022

A High Court in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has sentenced a dismissed police sergeant, James Imhalu, to death by hanging for the murder of a commercial driver in 2015 over his refusal to pay a bribe of N100.

Justice Elsie Thompson, while delivering her judgment, said evidence before the court showed that the sacked sergeant intentionally fired a shot at the commercial driver, Legbara David, at Whimpey Junction, Port Harcourt.

Justice Thompson described Imhalu as a serial trigger-happy policeman who should not be allowed to remain in the society.

The prosecution counsel, Kingsley Briggs, said the judgement would serve as succour to the deceased’s family.

“Although the will of justice grinds slowly, surely justice will come.

“For the family of those that lost their breadwinner, it is quite unfortunate. But I believe this judgement will serve as succour to the family,” he stated.

On his part, a representative of the Legal Aid Council in Rivers State, who defended the sergeant, Mr Awaji, said his team would study the judgement to know the next line of action.

He said, “Today’s judgement I will say is justice for the people of Rivers State.

“Despite the fact that I represented the defendant, my analysis of the case when I came into the matter, I would say, I saw it coming.

“Having listened to the judgement, currently, there is no plan to go on appeal. But by the time we look at the judgement in-depth, perhaps we will find grounds for appeal. But as it is, there is no plan to go on appeal.”

Kwara internet fraudster jailed for two years, forfeits car worth N13 Million by Sirdave7(m) : 5:20 pm On Jun 30, 2022

Justice Mohammed Sani of the Federal High Court sitting in Ilorin, Kwara State, has sentenced an unemployed Internet fraudster, Olamilekan Olukayode, to two years’ imprisonment for cybercrime.

The court also ordered Olukayode to forfeit a 350 Mercedes Benz valued at N13m to the Federal Government.

The Ilorin Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission prosecuted the 26-year-old Ondo State indigene for offences bordering on cybercrime.

The Head of Media and Publicity of EFCC, Wilson Uwajuaren, in a statement, said the convict was among the 30 suspected Internet fraudsters arrested in Ado-Ekiti on April 26, 2022, during a sting operation following intelligence reports on the activities of fraudsters in the area.

“Investigation into the matter revealed that Olukayode, who currently has no defined job, specialised in Internet fraud and had benefited several millions of naira from his fraudulent activities, part of which he used to purchase a Mercedes Benz ML 350 in the sum of N13m,” the statement added.

Olukayode pleaded guilty to the charge.

Following his guilty plea, counsel for the EFCC, Sesan Ola, reviewed the facts of the case.

He also tendered the extra-judicial statements of the defendant, phones, HP laptop and the car recovered from him at the point of arrest, as well as fraudulent messages printed from his devices, which were admitted in evidence.

Justice Sani, in his judgement, said he found merit in the case of the prosecution and consequently convicted him.

The judge sentenced Olukayode to one-year imprisonment each on counts one and two with a fine option of N300,000 on each count.

The court also ordered the forfeiture of the iPhone 12, Infinix X65, HP laptop and Mercedes Benz recovered from the convict to the Federal Government.
