Heartbreak is the ugly side of a beautiful and scintillating romantic relationship that no one wishes for. It is an experience that many people dread to have because it comes with pains that are difficult to cope with. Sometimes the pains become so unbearable that the only way to escape them is to think of suicide. Unfortunately, many actually ended their lives due to their inability to cope with the excruciating pain of heartbreak. But the question is, what are the factors that bring about this ugly experience in a relationship? If you have ever been heartbroken, it's important to take a stock of the events that culminated in the experience to avoid a recurrence. An honest retrospective view of the relationship and the events that culminated in the heartbreak will help a great deal in a better engagement in the future.
Sometimes, the factors that bring about the ugly experience of heartbreak could be one or all of the followings.
• Lack of discernment- By this, I mean your inability to code if your dating partner is genuine with the profession of his/her love for you and serious about the relationship. The truth of the matter is, that many young people are in the game of hunting, conquering, and dumping at a certain stage of their lives. For some young guys, the goal of seeking a relationship is to have fun and move on, not with intention of any form of commitment. The same applies to young ladies who seek out men to “milk”, dump, and move on in search of others. If you find yourself attracted to such a person, chances are that you may be carried away with certain irresistible romantic gestures and settled into the relationship with the whole of your heart, only to be dumped along the line, resulting in heartbreak. To avoid heartbreak, it is important to be smart in coding what the intending dating partner is up to.
• Letting your Guard Down so Easily-This is particularly peculiar to the ladies. Most times the pain of the heartbreak is intensified by the realization of the fact that she was deceived with promises of love and commitment, only to be used and dumped. This usually happens to ladies who lack the discipline to maintain a relationship without sexual intimacy. There are many used and dumped girls out there. Most times, guys simply walk away after successfully getting you in bed as many times as they wish. In a relationship that has not yet culminated in a genuine marital commitment, losing your pride is a foolish thing to do and may set you up for this ugly experience.
• Inability to Connect with Your Partner- To be indispensable in a relationship, it is not enough to profess love to your partner, it is very important to understand how to connect with him/ her properly. By this, I mean understanding his/her personality and the things that are important to her/her. Every matured individual in a relationship has a need that the dating partner is expected to understand and meet effectively, with the exception of sexual needs. As a matter of fact, not everyone is out for s*x in a relationship. Some people are out to find a meaningful connection with someone. You must be able to understand the person’s love language, what he/she values in a relationship, likes, and dislikes, etc. relating with him/her along these lines gives you a secured place in his or her heart. But if you consistently failed to understand and connect with your partner properly, he or she may be left unfulfilled and unhappy in the relationship, and this might breed the desire to move away from you.
• High Demand- The moment you begin to see your partner as an “ATM” machine that must meet your daily financial needs without taking into consideration, his/her financial stand, you are bound to lose that relationship. A genuine relationship is not built on money or material things alone. What sustains a relationship is the values that both of you add to each other’s life.
There are other factors that are not listed here. The goal is to take a retrospective view of your past relationship, and honestly point out to yourself what your role was in the experience you had, learn and avoid them in your next relationship.
