University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has moved up to the fifth position in the July 2022 ranking of Nigerian universities, barely one year after Prof. Owunari Georgewill became the vice-chancellor.

This came as the vice chancellor expressed concern over the lingering strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), assuring that the institution will continue to channel efforts towards impactful and intellectual accomplishment.

A statement by the Public Relations Officer of the institution, Sam Kpenu, quoted Georgewill as saying: “The new ranking confirms that the hard work of UNIPORT is recognised and valued.”

The university, moving up to the fifth position in the July 2022 Webometrics ranking, is an indication that we are driven to meet the world’s challenges. Our goal is to elevate UNIPORT to become overall best in Africa and well ranked in the world.”

He said the university’s management will continue to provide vision and strategy to strengthen intellectual property and identify new ventures and opportunities in the entrepreneurial ecosystem.

He added: “We will engage with internal and external partners to build and grow innovation activities. There has been wonderful growth in the educational and infrastructural development of the university since I came in as the vice-chancellor. And with this new ranking, we will be leading our effort to create even greater impact.”
